Northern Rhodesia competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. 12 competitors, 11 men and 1 woman, took part in 13 events in 5 sports. These were the only Games for Northern Rhodesia. On 24 October 1964, Zambia declared independence from Northern Rhodesia, the first time a country entered an Olympic games as one country and left it as another. For that ceremony, the team celebrated by marching with a new placard with the word "Zambia" on it. They were the only team to use a placard for the closing ceremony.

The South Africa national under-23 football team is a youth football (soccer) team, which represents South Africa and is controlled by the South African Football Association, the governing body for football in South Africa. The team's main objectives are to qualify and play at the All-Africa Games and Olympic Games. The team has played at three All-Africa Games and one Olympic tournament. Players who are selected, will be 23 or younger in the following Olympic year. With the next Olympics being held in London in 2012, players need to have been born on or after 1 January 1989. At the Olympic finals tournament, the team may be supplemented with 3 over-age players.
Zambia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its twelfth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1964 Summer Olympics. The delegation consisted of seven competitors; three track and field athletes Gerald Phiri, Prince Mumba and Chauzje Choosha, one each in Boxing and Judo and two swimmers, Zane Jordan and Jade Ashleigh Howard. Phiri, Mumba, Choombe and Munyonga had qualified by meeting the standards in their respective sports, and Choosha, Jordan and Howard qualified by wildcard places. Mumba was the national flag bearer at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Zambia women's national football team, nicknamed The She-polopolo, represents the country in international match. There is also a Zambia women's national under-17 football team, a Zambia women's national under-20 football team, and Olympic qualifying team and a Homeless World Cup team. The country has participated in several qualifying tournaments for the FIFA Women's World Cup and other African-based football tournaments. The team is currently ranked 116th in the world.
Jeffrey Christopher Horn Jr. is an Australian professional boxer who held the WBO welterweight title from 2017 to 2018. As an amateur he represented Australia at the 2012 Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals of the light-welterweight bracket. As of June 2020, he is ranked as the world's tenth best active middleweight by BoxRec.
Chauzje Choosha is a Zambian sprinter. She participated in the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships where she established a new Zambian national record in the 60 metres, and was eliminated at the semi-final stage of the 100 metres at the African Championships in Athletics. Choosha qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics via a wildcard and did not qualify for the preliminary round of the 100 metres.
Jade Howard is a Zambian swimmer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's 100 metre freestyle, finishing in 39th place overall in the heats, failing to qualify for the semifinals.
