Gingerbread is a 2019 novel by Helen Oyeyemi.

Writing and composition

Oyeyemi lives in Prague, and the local tradition of producing gingerbread, known as perník, inspired its inclusion in the book. [1]

Reception

According to Book Marks, the book received a "positive" consensus, based on twenty-three critics: nine "rave", twelve "positive", one "mixed", and one "pan". [2] On Books in the Media, the book was rated 3.57 out of 5, based on nine critic reviews. [3] In the May/June 2019 issue of Bookmarks , the book was scored four out of five. The magazine's critical summary reads: "Challenging, then, but also entrancing and rewarding". [4]

Eowyn Ivey, in a review for the New York Times Book Review , praised the book as "jarring, funny, surprising, unsettling, disorienting and rewarding." [5]
