Glatton was launched as an East Indiaman. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) before her owners sold her in 1772. Her new owner, James Mather, renamed her Lord Howe and first deployed her to bring timber from North America to England. Mather then hired her out as a transport. She was last listed in 1782 and was probably the "ordinance storeship Lord Howe" that foundered in that year.

Career

1st EIC voyage (1763–1764): Captain Richard Doveton sailed from Portsmouth on 7 March 1763, bound for the East Indies and China. Glatton reached Benkulen on 29 July, and Batavia on 6 November. She arrived at Whampoa anchorage on 30 January 1764. Homeward-bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 25 March, reached st Helena on 8 August, and arrived back at Long Reach on 15 November. [4]

2nd EIC voyage (1765–1767): Captain Doveton sailed from the Downs on 26 December 1765, bound for Madras and China. Glatton reached the Cape on 27 March 1766, and Madras on 6 June. She arrived at Whampoa on 8 September. Homeward-bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 10 January 1767, reached St Helena on 21 April 1767, and arrived back at the Downs on 9 July. [4]

3rd EIC voyage (1769–1770): Captain Doveton sailed from the Downs on 2 January 1769, bound for China. Glatton arrived at Whampoa on 12 July. Homeward-bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 29 November, reached St Helena on 20 February 1770, and arrived back at the Downs on 26 April. [4]

4th EIC voyage (1771–1772): Captain Doveton sailed from Portsmouth on 6 February 1771, bound for China. Glatton reached Batavia on 20 June and arrived at Whampoa on 8 August. Homeward-bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 7 January 1772, reached St Helena on 11 April, and arrived at the Downs on 24 June. [4]

Lord Howe (1772–1781): James Mather purchased Glatton and renamed her Lord Howe. Missing volumes of Lloyd's Register (LR) have resulted in Lord Howe first appearing in LR in 1776. [3]

On 10 May 1776 the transport Lord Howe, Oswald, master, was among the transports that brought troops and supplies for the relief of Quebec. [5]

One source has the Americans seizing the transport Lord Howe in Boston on 17 June 1776 when she arrived there after the British had evacuated the town. [1] The vessel seized appears to have been a different Lord Howe, as the former Glatton continued to appear in LR with updated data.

While Lord Howe was at Quebec she was apparently hired for a time as an armed ship, with the Royal Navy appointing a naval officer to command her. Commander Thomas Pringle commanded the "Lord Howe armed ship" from 10 May to 25 November. However, he was also appointed to command the British naval forces on Lake Champlain. These forces succeeded on 11 and 13 November 1776 in destroying almost the entire American flotilla there. [6]

Fate

The "Ordinance storeship Lord Howe", from London, foundered on 17 October 1781 at 45°26′N41°00′W / 45.433°N 41.000°W / 45.433; -41.000 . The crew were saved. [7]

Lord Howe (ex-Glatton) was last listed in 1781. [8]

Notes

  1. It was standard practice for some time for the EIC to declare a burthen of 499 tons, or fewer. By doing so the company avoided the expense of paying for a chaplain as then the law required for vessels of 500 tons or over.

<i>Charles Grant</i> (1810 EIC ship)

Charles Grant was built at Bombay 1810. Between 1810 and 1833 she made 12 voyages as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). Her owners sold her in 1834. She then sailed for new owners until 1838 when they had her broken up. Alternatively, she may have been sold to India and burnt there in 1847 at Bombay.

<i>Scaleby Castle</i> (1798 EIC ship)

Scaleby Castle was launched in 1798 at Bombay. She made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) under charter. At the end of the first she changed to British Registry. Her owners sold her in 1806 to William Moffat, who then entered into a four-voyage contract with the EIC as a regular ship. The EIC purchased Scaleby Castle outright in 1816. She proceeded to make 10 more voyages for the EIC. In all, she made 17 voyages for the EIC, a record. In 1833-35 the EIC ended its commercial activities and sold its vessels. New owners continued to sail Scaleby Castle to China and India. She was last listed in 1841. In 1847 her owners sold her as a hulk.

Britannia was launched by the Bombay Dockyard in 1772, and was rebuilt in 1778. The British East India Company (EIC) apparently acquired her in 1775. Between 1779 she made eleven complete voyages as an East Indiaman for the EIC. She also participated in three naval campaigns, during the first of which she was deployed as a cruiser off Sumatra. There she engaged and captured a French ship. In the other two she served as a transport. She set out for her twelfth EIC voyage but was lost in 1805 during the third naval campaign.

<i>Lascelles</i> (1779 EIC ship)

Lascelles was launched in 1779 as an East Indiaman. She made eight voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), and then briefly became a West Indiaman. She was sold to the government for use as a storeship, but was broken up in 1807.

Contractor was launched in 1779 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She made one voyage as a transport for a military expedition before her owners sold her in 1800 for use as a transport.

Dublin was launched in 1784 as an East Indiaman. She made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), to India and China. On her last voyage for the EIC she recaptured a country ship. Her owners sold Dublin in 1800 and she became a West Indiaman, but apparently was lost on her first voyage.

Sovereign was launched at Rotherhithe in 1800 as a West Indiaman. The British East India Company (EIC) then took her up as an "extra" ship on several contracts; in all she made seven voyages as an East Indiaman for the EIC. After she left the EIC's service in 1817 she continued to trade with India, but under a license from the EIC. She was broken up in 1822.

Osterley was an East Indiaman launched on 9 October 1771 by Wells, Deptford. She made two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) before the French frigate Pourvoyeuse captured her on 21 February 1779 while she was on her third voyage. She then sailed for a few years as a French merchantman.

Walpole was launched on the Thames in 1779. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). On the sixth voyage, on her way to China, her captain discovered an island that he named Walpole Island. She was sold for breaking up in 1799.

Walmer Castle was launched in 1796 as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). She made nine voyages for the EIC before she was sold in 1815 to sail as a troopship and supply ship for the British Army. She was broken up in 1821.

Essex was launched on 7 February 1803 by Perry, Blackwell as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) until on 20 August 1821 her register was cancelled as she had been demolished.

Coldstream was launched in 1810. She may have sailed to the West Indies before becoming an extra ship for the British East India Company (EIC) and making nine voyages as an East Indiaman. After the end of the EIC's maritime activities Coldstream made one more voyage to India and China. She disappeared in 1835 while returning to Britain from China.

Marquis of Huntly was launched at Rotherhithe in 1811. She made 11 voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1812 and 1834, when she was broken up.

Grenville was launched at Deptford in 1764 as an East Indiaman. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) before her owners sold her in 1777 to the Royal Navy, which renamed her HMS Tortoise and employed her as a transport. She foundered in 1779.

Ranger was launched in 1776 in France, possibly as an East Indiaman for the French East India Company, and almost certainly under another name. From 1780 to 1786 she was a British vessel that was a transport and traded generally. In 1786–1787 she made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). <i>Asia</i> (1811 EIC ship) UK East India merchant ship (1811–1840)

Asia was launched in 1811 on the River Thames as an East Indiaman. She made 10 voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She then continued to sail to India and China after the EIC gave up its trading activities in 1834. She was condemned and hulked in 1840.

Prince Regent was launched at Blackwall in 1811. She made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1811 and 1834 to India and China. She made one more voyage to China after the end of the EIC's trading activities in 1833, and was broken up in 1838.

Princess Amelia was launched in 1808 on the Thames as an East Indiaman. She made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). The first six were as a "regular" ship; the next four represented single voyages contracted for by the EIC. On several of these voyages Princess Amelia brought to England Chinese sailors, or carried them back to China after they had become stranded in London at the end of EIC vessels' arrival back in England. On her fifth voyage Princess Amelia repatriated 380 Chinese sailors. She was broken up in 1827.
