Glengarry Shinty Club is a shinty team from Invergarry, Inverness-shire, Scotland. The club has played in its present form since 1976. There is one senior team, competing in North Division Two . The club also runs a highly successful women's team.
A club called Glengarry played against Fort Augustus in 1882 and was active in the 1930s. However, in 1948 the club amalgamated with Fort Augustus and became Inveroich. The club was reconstituted as Glengarry in 1976 and has continued to this day. The club won the Balliemore Cup in 1985, 1988 and 1989 and also reached the final of the Valerie Fraser Cup in 1990 and 1991.
The men's team now competes in North Division Two, a decision taken to drop a division with the move to summer shinty which the club opposed.
In 2010, the club led North Division Two for much of the season but were overhauled by Glenurquhart. The Drumnadrochit team turned down the opportunity to gain promotion and Glengarry were also offered the option. But they wanted a play-off against Strathglass to test themselves but Strathglass had been given an assurance that their place in North Division One was secure, the Garry therefore turned down promotion. Craigard park is a popular venue for semi-finals and juvenile finals. The park was constructed with assistance from the Laird of Glengarry and also hosts the Invergarry Highland Games. [2]
Glengarry Shinty Club has produced some fine players. James Clark was originally a Garry player before he became a talisman in the successful Fort William sides of the 1900s and 2000s. Matthew Clark joined the club at the age of 12 and has come through the ranks to become one of few ambassadors for the sport. In 2009 he took his Glengarry side to meet Newtonmore in the final of the Joal Toal six-a-sides at Spean Bridge. Steven "DD" Cameron played for Scotland and his family are inextricably linked with the Glengarry Club. [3]
In 1997, Glengarry established what was then one of only three teams in Women's Shinty. The club has become the most successful in the short history of competitive women's shinty. [4] They host the Johnstone Trophy, an indoor five-a-side tournament in Fort William every winter. [5]
Glengarry player Karen Cameron is the former president of the Women's Camanachd Association.
Skye Camanachd is a shinty team from the Isle of Skye, Highland, Scotland. It plays in the Premier Division and has a reserve team in North Division One, as well as a Ladies team in the WCA National Division One and a Ladies reserve team in the WCA Development League. The club is based at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
Aberdour Shinty Club is a shinty club which plays in Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. It is the only senior Shinty Club in Fife and was founded in 2001. In 2011, the club entered two teams into senior competition. Its first team competing in Marine Harvest National Division, and its second team in South Division Two.
Glasgow Mid Argyll Shinty Club (GMA) is a shinty club from Glasgow, Scotland. It is the only senior side in Glasgow and was founded in 1928. They have two men's sides and two women's sides. All GMA teams play at Peterson Park.
Strathglass Shinty Club or "Comunn Camanachd Straghlais" in Scottish Gaelic is a shinty club from Cannich, Inverness-shire. The Club was founded in 1879, is considered to be the oldest constituted club in shinty and played a major role in the development of the rules of the sport. The first team plays in National Division One but played in the Marine Harvest Premier Division after two successive promotions from the old North Division One from 2006 to 2008. The club restarted its second team in 2017, and there is a successful women's team, started in 2006.
Glenurquhart Shinty Club is a shinty team which plays in Drumnadrochit on the banks of Loch Ness, Scotland. It draws its players from the part of the Great Glen which encompasses Drumnadrochit, Lewiston and Glenurquhart. The club has been existence since 1885. They won their first senior trophy, the MacAulay Cup in 2012. After 2013 and 2014 saw them lose two successive MacTavish Cups, they are currently the holders as of 2015.
Beauly Shinty Club is a shinty club from Beauly, Scotland. The club was founded in 1892. The club has two sides, the first team competing in the MOWI Premiership and the second team in MOWI North Division One.
Inverness Shinty Club is a shinty club from Inverness, Scotland. The first team competes in North Division One and the second team in North Division Three. Founded in 1887 as Inverness Town and County Shinty Club to distinguish from other clubs in Inverness such as Clachnacuddin, Inverness moved to the Bught Park in 1934. Inverness won the Camanachd Cup in 1952. The club struggles to compete for players with the wide proliferation of football clubs in Inverness, in particular Inverness Caledonian Thistle but still manages to put out two teams.
Lewis Camanachd (Scottish Gaelic: Comann Camanachd Leòdhais is the senior shinty team from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The club entered North Division Three for the first time in 2011. This was the first time a team from the Western Isles was allowed to compete in league shinty. However, the club was only allowed in on trial and awaited a decision from the Camanachd Association as to whether this was to become a permanent arrangement. Lewis was granted entry on a permanent basis from 2012.
Lovat Shinty Club is a shinty club from Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire, Scotland. The club was formed in 1888 and has a healthy rivalry with near neighbours Beauly. The club takes its name from the area within which it plays in and shared this name with the late Second World War hero, Lord Lovat.
Invergarry is a village in the Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Great Glen, near where the River Garry flows into Loch Oich.
The Mod Cup, also known as the Aviemore Cup1995 - Royal National Mòd Programmes and fringe events > Royal National Mòd Programmes > [Mod / Mòd Naìseanta Rìoghail - An Comunn Gaidhealach - National Library of Scotland] is a trophy in the sport of shinty first competed for in 1969, traditionally played for by the two teams who are based closest to the host venue of the Royal National Mod. Women's shinty is a sport, played almost entirely within Scotland, identical to the men's game – with the same rules, same sized pitch and same equipment. It is administered by the Women's Camanachd Association.
The Balliemore Cup is a knock-out cup in the sport of shinty. It is the Intermediate Championship run under the auspices of the Camanachd Association and only first teams competing in the National, North Division One and South Division One are eligible for entry.
The Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup also known as the Valerie Fraser Trophy or the Women's Camanachd Cup is the premier trophy in Women's shinty and is currently sponsored by Peter Gow. It is played on a knock-out basis by the teams in the National Division 1 League and is administered by the Women's Camanachd Association. The current holders are Skye Camanachd.
The Strathdearn Cup is a knock-out competition in the sport of shinty. The present holders are Lovat Shinty Club.
Strathspey Camanachd is a shinty club based in Grantown-on-Spey, Strathspey, Scotland, currently competing in the Marine Harvest North Division Two.
Badenoch & Strathspey Ladies Shinty Club is a shinty club based in the area of Badenoch and Strathspey, Highland, Scotland.
James "Big Jim" Clark is an ex-shinty player from Invergarry, Scotland. He gained fame from his last minute goals which secured a succession of Camanachd Cup triumphs for Fort William Shinty Club.
The WCA North Division Two is a second tier league for women in the sport of shinty, and is run by the Women's Camanachd Association. The league was last played for in season 2013 won by Skye Camanachd before a two-year experiment with a WCA National Division Two. However a growth in clubs in both the North and the South of Scotland saw season 2016 begin with return to regional second level set-up with a WCA North Division 2 and WCA South Division 2. All three leagues are sponsored by Marine Harvest. Below these divisions is the WCA Development League but this has no relegation or promotion consisting entirely of second teams and a team from the Outer Hebrides.
The Women's Camanachd Association (WCA) Challenge Cup is the second-tier trophy in women's shinty. It is currently sponsored by Mowi who have sponsored the cup since 2014. It is played on a knock-out basis by the teams in the National Division 2 Leagues and is administered by the Women's Camanachd Association. The current holders are Lovat.
