The Gnowangerup Times was an English language newspaper published between 1912 and 1918 in Katanning, Western Australia by the Great Southern Herald publishers, for the community in Gnowangerup. [1]

History

The Gnowangerup Times was published from Katanning, with J.F. Cullen as editor and publisher. [2] [3] It was one of a few local newspapers from the same publisher - the Tambellup Times had a similar publication range of 1912-1924. [4] Cullen, the editor, had a penchant for editorialising about Australian federal politics, and commented on the state of the parliamentary politics. [5]

The Shire of Gnowangerup is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 120 kilometres (75 mi) north of Albany and about 370 kilometres (230 mi) southeast of the capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of 4,268 square kilometres (1,648 sq mi), and its seat of government is the town of Gnowangerup.

The 94.1-kilometre (58.5 mi) Tambellup to Ongerup branch line from the Great Southern Railway main line between Perth and Albany was opened to Gnowangerup on 1 July 1912, and finally through to Ongerup on 6 January 1913. The line was developed to provide direct access for the expanding wheat production area to the port at Albany. The line was authorised for construction under the Tambellup-Ongerup Railway Act 1911.

The Great Southern Herald is a weekly newspaper published in Katanning, Western Australia. It is distributed to communities in Katanning, Kojonup, Cranbrook, Gnowangerup and Lake Grace.

The Central Great Southern Football League (CGSFL) was based in and around the Shire of Katanning. The CGSFL was formed in 1960 following a merger between the Katanning Football Association and Tambellup Football Association. The CGSFL ran from 1960 to 1990 before it merged with the Southern Districts Football League (SDFL) to form the Great Southern Football League (GSFL).
