Golar Spirit is a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). It is the world's first FSRU converted from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. [1]
Golar Spirit was built by the Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in 1981 as an LNG carrier. [2] It was the first Japan-built and first Asia-built LNG carrier. [3] In 1986, Golar Spirit was chartered for twenty years by Indonesian oil and gas company Pertamina. [4] It served the line delivering LNG from Indonesia to South Korea. [5]
In April 2007, Golar Spirit was charter contracted by Petrobras to serve as the Pecém LNG terminal. The conversion started in October 2007 at the Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. [6] [7] The conversion was completed in mid-2008 and Golar Spirit headed to Brazil on 11 June 2008. [7] [8] On her course, the Golar Spirit transported a LNG load from Trinidad and Tobago to Brazil. [8] [9] She arrived in Pecém on 22 July 2008. [9]
On 30 January 2009, Golar Spirit became the first vessel of this kind, which regasified LNG aboard.[ citation needed ]
The FSRU Golar Spirit operates at a jetty to which it is moored. LNG is transported to the FSRU by LNG carriers, that berth to the other side of the jetty. The LNG is vaporized in the onboard regasification system, which enables the FSRU to provide natural gas to the onshore consumers (power plants). It is a steel mono hull with LNG tanks arranged in the middle, with the re-gasification plant in the forward section and crew facilities with control room and utility machinery in the aft section. [1] The engineering of the regasification system and the tanks were provided by Moss Maritime of Norway. [10] [11] The Norwegian company Bjørge engineered its pressure protection system through its subsidiary Solberg & Andersen. [12]
Golar Spirit is equipped with a regasification system comprising high pressure LNG pumps, cryogenic LNG vaporizers and associated valves, piping and instrumentation. LNG pumps are provided by Shinko, while LNG vaporizers are provided by Thermax. The vaporizers use steam generated by the onboard existing steam boilers. The design pressure of the vaporizers exceeds 85 bars (8,500 kPa). Each vaporiser with wall thickness of over 55 millimeters (2.2 in) is over 8 meters (26 ft) long and weighs in excess of 5.5 metric tons (6.1 short tons). [11] The regasification capacity of the Golar Spirit is 7 million cubic meters per day (250×10 6 cu ft/d) (over 240 metric tons or 260 short tons of LNG per hour), and its storage capacity is 129 thousand cubic meters (4.6×10 6 cu ft) of LNG, equivalent to 77 million cubic meters (2.7×10 9 cu ft) of natural gas.[ citation needed ]
Det Norske Veritas has issued a Statement of Approval of the Regasification Plant and Interim Class Certificate confirming the REGAS-2 Class notation. [1]
Golar Spirit is owned by Golar LNG. [1] It was charter contracted by Petrobras for ten years starting from the second half of 2008 [7] however, it announced in December 2016 that it would terminate the contract early on June 21, 2017. [13] Golar Spirit has been in layup since. [14] [15] A 2020 report by Golar LNG claimed that it would cost $10 million to reactivate the vessel. [16]
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4, with some mixture of ethane, C2H6) that has been cooled down to liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized storage or transport. It takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state (at standard conditions for temperature and pressure).
A floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. An FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline. FPSOs are preferred in frontier offshore regions as they are easy to install, and do not require a local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. FPSOs can be a conversion of an oil tanker or can be a vessel built specially for the application. A vessel used only to store oil is referred to as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel.

Golar LNG owns and operates marine LNG infrastructure. The company had developed Floating LNG liquefaction terminal (FLNG) and Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) projects based on the conversion of existing LNG carriers. Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) studies have now been completed for a larger newbuild FLNG solution. Golar is also collaborating with another industry leader to investigate solutions for the floating production of blue and green ammonia as well as carbon reduction in LNG production.

The Adriatic LNG terminal is a liquid natural gas offshore terminal, formally known as Terminale GNL Adriatico Srl. Located in the northern Adriatic 9 miles (14 km) offshore of Porto Levante, Porto Viro, near Rovigo, Italy, it is the world's first offshore gravity-based structure LNG regasification terminal. The terminal is operated by ExxonMobil (70%), Qatar Terminal Ltd., a subsidiary of QatarEnergy (23%), and Snam (7%).
Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited, commonly known as Nakilat is a Qatari shipping and maritime company. Its LNG shipping fleet is the largest in the world, comprising 69 vessels. The company also jointly owns one Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) and 4 very large LPG carriers (VLGCs). Through its in-house shipmanagement, Nakilat manages and operates the four very large LPG carriers and 14 LNG carriers.
The Świnoujście LNG terminal is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Świnoujście, in the extreme north-west of Poland near the Polish-German border. The LNG terminal is operated by Polskie LNG S.A., a subsidiary of Gaz-System. The cornerstone for construction was laid on 23 March 2011 and it took its first LNG delivery on 11 December 2015. The terminal's regasification capacity is 5 billion cubic metres per annum. The terminal is currently being expanded and once the expansion is complete in 2023, it will have a capacity of 7.5 billion cubic metres per annum and be able to satisfy about half of Poland's annual natural gas demand. Together with the 10 bcm of natural gas that Poland will receive annually from Norway via the Baltic Pipe natural gas pipeline, the Świnoujście LNG terminal will allow Poland achieve its long-term goal of becoming fully independent of Russian natural gas, which had previously been the source of almost all of the country's natural gas.

Costa Azul LNG is sea port and natural gas processing center, located 15 miles north of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Opened in 2008, the terminal can process, regasification, up to one billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. This is the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the North America west coast. LNG carrier ships capable of holding up to 220,000m3 of LNG can dock in the deep water port off the coast to unload LNG. The natural gas from the terminal is used to produce electricity and is fed by pipe lines to factories. The longest pipeline runs north, to the United States. Sempra Energy is a partner in the port with PEMEX. The LNG ship Al Safliya was the first ship to port and unload at Costa Azul. The Al Safliya is a 210,000 cubic meter LNG ship, its LNG was from Qatar. The other Mexican LNG Terminal in the Pacific Ocean is at Manzanillo, Colima, the Manzanillo LNG Terminal.

She the country's first vessel of this type.
