Gono Mukti Fouz (People's Liberation Army) [1] is a left wing terrorist group in Bangladesh. [2] The organization is similar in ideology to other left-wing armed groups like Biplobi Communist Party, Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party, Purbo Banglar Communist Party (Janajuddho), and Purbo Banglar Communist Party. [3] The group is most active in South-Western Districts of Bangladesh. [4] [5]

Gono Mukti Fouz has received patronage from leaders of different political parties in Kushtia. According to a leader of Gono Mukti Fouz patrons include Kushtia District Awami League unit Vice President Haji Rabiul and General Secretary Azgor Ali. [6] South Asian Terrorism Portal has described the outfit as an "Inactive Terrorist/Insurgent Groups". [7]

History

In April 2005, an activist of Gono Mukti Fouz, Jahid Master, was arrested by Bangladesh Police from Comilla District and taken to Kushtia District. While taking him to a location to recover weapons, Rapid Action Battalion unit were attacked. In the ensuing gunfight Jahid Master and another member of Gono Mukti Fouz were killed. [8]

On 17 March 2009, Gono Mukti Fouz distributed flyers and published a list of people it was going to kill in Kushtia District. [9] On 27 July 2010, two activists of Gono Mukti Fouz, including one former Leader of Bangladesh Mohila Awami League, were sentenced to life imprisonment for smuggling weapons. [10]

Gono Mukti Fouz chief Aminul Islam Mukul was detained in India in 2010 for immigration fraud and sentenced to years imprisonment. On 1 June 2013, Rapid Action Battalion arrested his wife Sahida Khatun. [11]

On 26 June 2013, Gono Mukti Fouz tried to kidnap someone from Biharia village. Hearing the commotion the villagers gathered around the house which prompted the Fouz to shoot at the villagers killing two. [12] The Second in Command of Gono Mukti Fouz, Fazlul Haq alias Fazlu Matbor, was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion in Kushtia on 22 September 2013. [13]

On 11 February 2016, two activists were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion. [14] On 11 November 2016, two leaders of Gono Mukti Fouz were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion. [15]

On 28 December 2020, a leader of Gono Mukti Fouz was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion from Kushtia District. [16]

Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, is an anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police. This elite force consists of members of the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Civil Service and Bangladesh Ansar. It was formed on 26 March 2004 as RAT, and commenced operations on 14 April 2004.

Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party is a communist party in Bangladesh. The party played a role in the independence struggle of the country. In the early 1970s it engaged in armed struggle supporting the new Bangladeshi state. Since then its political fortunes have dwindled, having suffered from several waves of internal divisions. The group remains active, and still carries out attacks against its opponents.

Maoist Bolshevik Reorganisation Movement of the Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party is an underground communist party in Bangladesh. It was formed in 2001, following a split from the Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party. Following the formation of PBSP(MBRM), the party revived the agrarian struggles of PBSP in the Rajbari area, seizing 3,000 bighas of land and distributing them among landless peasants. Two police camps were set up in the area to counter the influence of the party.

The Purbo Banglar Communist Party or PBCP is an outlawed Maoist militant group in Bangladesh. The PBCP formed in 1968 following a split in the Bangladesh Communist Party. It is mainly active in the areas of Khulna and Jessore in the South West of Bangladesh near the border of the Indian state of West Bengal where CPI-Maoist Naxalite insurgents have been active in an ongoing Civil War against the Indian state. The PBCP suffers from violent rivalry both internally and externally with different Party factions and rival splinter groups. The PBCP was criticized by Siraj Sikder, the founder of the Proletarian Party of East Bengal, as being a neo-revisionist and a party that is "left in form but right in essence".

Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the current Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false. The current Awami League government denies involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.

Gopal Krishna Muhuri was the principal of Nazirhat College in Chittagong, Bangladesh, who was murdered in his home. The Daily Star described the case as "sensational".

Allah'r Dal is an Islamic terrorist organisation operating in Bangladesh. The group also operates under the name Allah'r Sarkar. Bangladesh Enterprise Institute in their 2007-2008 Trends in Militancy in Bangladesh report referred to the group as an offshoot of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh. According to the report the group is most active in Kushtia District, Meherpur District, and Chuadanga District.

Killing of Ekramul Haque refers to the extrajudicial killing of Ekramul Haque, councillor of Teknaf Municipality Ward three, by a unit of Rapid Action Battalion. That resulted in the first usage of the Magnitsky Act against Bangladeshi officials.

The Maoist insurgency in Bangladesh is an ongoing conflict between the government of Bangladesh and the PBCP and the PBCP-J.

Miftah Uddin Ahmed is a Bangladesh Army Lieutenant Colonel and officer of Rapid Action Battalion who has been sanctioned by the United States for human rights violations.
