Wisani Goodman Mitileni, sometimes also spelled Mtileni, is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2021. He resigned from the legislature after being elected Regional Secretary of the ANC's Mopani branch in June 2021. Less than a year later, in March 2022, he was elected as Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

ANC Youth League

Mitileni joined the ANC as a teenager and served as the secretary of a local branch in 1993 to 1994 while he was in his last year of high school. [1] He remained active in the ANC and ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in subsequent years while he qualified, and then worked for five years, as a teacher. He later entered public administration as a youth development officer in the Mopani District Municipality, in which capacity he became a regional leader of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU). [1] In December 2005, he was elected simultaneously as Provincial Chairperson of SAMWU's Limpopo branch and as Provincial Deputy Secretary of the ANCYL's Limpopo branch. [1]

In the ANCYL role, he deputised Julius Malema, and in 2008, he became acting Provincial Secretary of the Limpopo ANCYL after Malema was elected to more senior office as national ANCYL President. [2] Mitileni continued in that position until the league's next provincial elective conference, [3] [4] held in Makhado in April 2010. Mitileni – along with his deputy Thandi Moraka and ANCYL Provincial Chairperson Lehlogonolo Masoga – was part of a group that led a walkout from the Makhado conference, protesting against what they described as Malema's attempts to interfere in the conference and install his allies in leadership positions. In the aftermath, the national ANCYL leadership laid disciplinary charges against Mitileni and Masoga. [5] [7] Both had been removed from their positions at their conference but they continued to dispute the fairness of the election,. [7] [8] and for some time thereafter Mitileni acted as secretary in a parallel ANCYL structure, headed by Masoga, which vied with the Malema-endorsed provincial league for legitimacy. [9] At the same time, Mitileni continued to work in public administration. [1]

Provincial legislature

Pursuant to the 2014 general election, Mitileni was sworn into the Limpopo Provincial Legislature for the first time, [1] having been ranked 29th on the ANC's provincial party list. [10] During the legislative term that followed, Mitileni ascended the ranks of the provincial SACP. At a party elective conference in Polokwane in May 2016, he was elected First Deputy Provincial Secretary of the Limpopo SACP, serving under Provincial Secretary Gilbert Kganyago. [11] Subsequently, when Kganyago resigned in November 2018 in connection with the corruption scandal at VBS Mutual Bank, Mitileni was appointed to step in as acting Provincial Secretary. [12]

He was re-elected to his legislative seat in the 2019 general election, ranked third on the party list. [10] Less than halfway into his second legislative term, in June 2021, Mitileni was elected unopposed as Regional Secretary of the ANC's largest branch in Limpopo, the Norman Mashabane branch in Mopani. He ran on a slate aligned to Mopani Mayor Pule Shayi, who was elected Regional Chairperson at the same party conference. [13] [14] [15] Because the secretariat was a full-time position, Mitileni was obliged to resign from the provincial legislature to take it up; his seat was filled by Tshitereke Matibe in January 2022. [16]

In addition to the ANC Regional Secretary position, Mitileni continued to act as SACP Provincial Secretary until fresh elections were held in March 2022; in those elections, he was elected as SACP Provincial Chairperson, with Phophi Ramathuba as his deputy. [17]

Molapi Soviet Lekganyane is a South African politician from Limpopo province. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he was Member of the Limpopo Executive Council for Local Government and Housing from 2009 to 2012 under Premier Cassel Mathale. He served two terms as Provincial Secretary of the ANC in Limpopo, from 2011 to 2013 under Mathale and from 2018 to 2022 under Stan Mathabatha. He was formerly the Provincial Secretary of the South African Communist Party in Limpopo from 2008 to 2011 and in 2022 he was elected to a five-year term on the ANC's National Executive Committee.

Thandi Moraka is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature. She was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts and Culture in the Limpopo provincial government between July 2018 and October 2022. She is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and in 2022 was elected to a five-year term on the party's National Executive Committee. She formerly served as Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC Youth League from 2015 to 2019 and as a member of the Limpopo ANC's Provincial Executive Committee from 2018 to 2022.

Rodgers Basikopo Makamu is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in the Limpopo provincial government. He was formerly MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development between 2018 and 2019. A teacher by training and a member of the African National Congress (ANC), Makamu was elected to a second term as Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC's Limpopo branch in June 2022.

Seaparo Charles Sekoati, sometimes mispelled Seaparo Sekwati, is a South African politician who is currently serving in the Limpopo provincial government as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance. He has been a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2004 and was previously MEC for Health and Social Development from 2004 to 2009 and, before his appointment to his current position, MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism from 2013 to 2019. From 2013 to 2017, he was also Regional Chairperson of the Mopani branch of his political party, the African National Congress.

Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts and Culture in the Limpopo provincial government. She was appointed to that position in October 2022, shortly after she was elected Provincial Treasurer of the Limpopo branch of her political party, the African National Congress (ANC). She was first elected as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in the 2019 general election and before that was Mayor of Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality from August 2016 until December 2018, when the ANC asked her to resign during the corruption scandal at VBS Mutual Bank.

Selelo Donald Selamolela is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature. He was Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council for Roads and Transport from July 2013 to May 2014 and he subsequently served as Deputy Speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. He rose to prominence as the Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the ANC Youth League, although he was expelled from the league in July 2010 after falling out with league president Julius Malema.

Leswafo Joshua Matlou is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Mopani District Municipality from 2009 until 2014, when the ANC asked him to resign. He also served as the chairperson of the ANC's influential Mopani branch from 2009 to 2013 and before that was the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Limpopo.

Susani Violet Mathye is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2014. She was first elected to the provincial legislature in the 2014 general election, ranked 26th on the ANC's provincial party list. She was ranked 14th upon her re-election in the 2019 general election.

Simon Matsobane Mathe is a South African politician and trade unionist who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the General Secretary of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) from December 2015 until April 2019, when he and the union's other leaders were removed in a vote of no confidence.

Robert William Noel Tooley is a South African politician and public servant who served as Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Treasury from 2015 to 2019 under Premier Stan Mathabatha. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2007 and later from 2014 to 2019.

Bhekinkosi Michael Mtolo is a South African politician who has served as the Provincial Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal since July 2022. He was formerly the Mayor of Greater Kokstad Local Municipality from 2016 to 2022, after serving a term as Deputy Mayor from 2011 to 2016. He rose to prominence as the Provincial Secretary of the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal, an office he held until October 2011.

Pandelani "Sparks" Ramagoma was a South African politician and civil servant who served as Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works for three months until his death in a car accident in 2009. A former anti-apartheid activist, Ramagoma was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and served on the party's Provincial Executive Committee. At the time of his death, he was also the Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the South African Communist Party.

Pule Josiah Shayi is a South African politician who has served as the Mayor of Mopani District Municipality since 2019. Before that, he was Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019. He is best known as the Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Mopani region, an office he has held since 2017.
