Goodstart Early Learning is Australia's largest early learning provider. [1] Formed in 2010 by a syndicate of charities, Goodstart is a not-for-profit organisation that currently has 649 child care centres around Australia. [2] Goodstart's head office is located in Brisbane, Australia, in the suburb of Murarrie. Across Australia, approximately 70,000 children attend Goodstart. [3] Goodstart currently employs more than 13,000 staff members. [4]

History

Goodstart was formed after a syndication of charities bought out ABC Learning Centres when they went into voluntary liquidation in 2008. [5] The Goodstart syndicate was built in two separate stages. [6] The Benevolent Society, Social Ventures Australia, and Mission Australia came together in 2008. The Brotherhood of St Laurence joined the group in 2009.

The group approached private and public investors to raise the capital needed to buy out ABC Learning. With $15 million contributed by the Australian Federal Government as a medium-term loan, [7] the syndication of charities was named as the preferred bidders in December 2009. [8]

Please note: Not every centre offers vacation care and before/after school care, parents, guardians and caregivers are recommended to contact their local centre to confirm what is provided and available to families and children. [9]

Goodstart centres are primarily located in and near capital cities. Only 20% of centres are in regional or rural locations. [10]

Goodstart is a Public Company and is ranked at 454 out of the top 2,000 companies in Australia. [12] Total revenue generated in 2016 was reported as more than $900,000,000. [12] [13]

News and research

Goodstart has been in the news for current affairs and research contributions throughout the years they have been operating. Summaries of recent articles include:

  1. February 2020: Two staff working for Goodstart Early Learning in Edmonton (QLD) were charged with manslaughter, following the death of a three-year-old who was left in a daycare pickup van for a number of hours. [14]
  2. July 2017: Goodstart Early Learning in Glenfield Park (NSW) participated in a joint initiative with the Riviera Gums Retirement Village. Ongoing from January, children visited residents for an hour each month and did activities with them. [15]
  3. June 2017: Goodstart Early Learning in Goonellabah (NSW) had an electrical fire scare after a hot joint in the meter box. The centre was evacuated and no major damage was recorded. [16]
  4. January 2017: An employee from an Oxenford centre (in Queensland) lodged a statement of claim against Goodstart after sustaining a personal injury while changing a nappy in June 2014. [17]
  5. March 2017: Goodstart found 60% of households find child care unaffordable. They surveyed more than 1,500 families, and 82% of respondents said they would work more if child care was more affordable. [18]
  6. May 2016: Local parents publicly opposed the proposed expansion of the Myaree (WA) centre, citing increased traffic and decreased quality of care as key concerns. [19]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Action for Children</span> United Kingdom childrens charity

Action for Children is a UK children's charity created to help vulnerable children and young people and their families in the UK. The charity has 7,000 staff and volunteers who operate over 475 services in the UK. They served a total of 671,275 children in 2021 and 2022. Action for Children's national headquarters is in Watford, and it is a registered charity under English and Scottish law. In 2017/2018, it had a gross income of £151 million.

Sure Start is a UK Government area-based initiative, announced in 1998 by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, applying primarily in England with slightly different versions in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It introduced a network of children's centres and other services to support local families with children under 5, including "health services, parenting support, early learning and childcare, and parental employment support". The initiative originated from HM Treasury, with the aim of "giving children the best possible start in life" through improvement of childcare, early education, health and family support, with an emphasis on outreach and community development.

ABC Learning was an Australian company that was once the world's largest provider of early childhood education services. It was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange with its market capitalisation reaching A$2.5 billion in March 2006. The company went into administrative receivership after a fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis caused debt repayments to overwhelm the company, and the auditors failed to sign off on the financial reports citing the need to recast previous year's reported profits.

Edmund Stuart "Eddy" Groves, who was born in Durban, South Africa in 1966, is an Australian businessman, founder and former chief executive officer of ABC Learning, once one of Australia's largest companies and one of the world's biggest childcare providers prior to going into administration. In January 2013 Groves was declared bankrupt.

Cambodian Children's Fund (CCF) is a non-profit organisation, founded in 2004 by Scott Neeson to help children in Steung Meanchey, one of the poorest areas in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh. Initially established to support 45 children in need, CCF now educates over 2,000 children. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was a royal commission announced in November 2012 and established in 2013 by the Australian government pursuant to the Royal Commissions Act 1902 to inquire into and report upon responses by institutions to instances and allegations of child sexual abuse in Australia. The establishment of the commission followed revelations of child abusers being moved from place to place instead of their abuse and crimes being reported. There were also revelations that adults failed to try to stop further acts of child abuse. The commission examined the history of abuse in educational institutions, religious groups, sporting organisations, state institutions and youth organisations. The final report of the commission was made public on 15 December 2017.

Community Early Learning Australia is a peak organisation for children's services in New South Wales, Australia. It was known as Community Child Care Co-operative (NSW) up until 2017. It is a not-for-profit organisation. Its stated goals are to "inform and inspire the early education and care sector, and influence government policy, practices and programs so children in NSW can access quality early education and care that meet the needs of their communities." As such, it advocates for early education and child care services in New South Wales.

Stillbirth Foundation Australia is an organization which aims to improve care and conditions for people who have experienced the stillbirth of a child as well as preventing stillbirth. Their main work is funding research on why stillbirth happens. They have also encouraged Australian companies to allow parents of stillborn children to have parental leave. It is the only charity in Australia dedicated to stillbirth research.

Deborah Jane Brennan is an Australian Professor in social policy research, who was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia, in the Queens Birthday Honours list, in 2022, for her significant service to social policy research, gender equity and tertiary education.
