Gordon Shadrach

Anthony Gordon Shadrach is a Canadian artist and educator based in Toronto. Shadrach is known for exploring the semiotics of dress and its impact on culture, in particular the intersection and codification of race and fashion through his painting and textile based work. Born and raised in Brampton to Dominican and Trinidadian parents, Shadrach's work frequently engages themes of Blackness in Canada, the African Diaspora, and masculinity.

Early life and education

Shadrach was born in Brampton, Ontario and was educated at OCAD University and Niagara University. [1]

Notable shows and exhibitions

Shadrach started painting casually in 2013 exploring different forms of figurative painting and portraiture. His early paintings did not include the faces of the sitters, enabling the viewer to interpret their race, gender, and sexuality through solely drawing on their own experiences and preconceptions. He initially exhibited his work through public spaces including cafes, public art fairs, and small group shows.

Sandra Brewster is a Canadian visual artist based in Toronto. Her work is multidisciplinary in nature, and deals with notions of identity, representation and memory; centering Black presence in Canada.

Milly Ristvedt, also known as Milly Ristvedt-Handerek, is a Canadian abstract painter. Ristvedt lives and paints in Ontario, where she is represented by the Oeno Gallery. A monograph covering a ten-year retrospective of her work, Milly Ristvedt-Handerek: Paintings of a Decade, was published by the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in 1979. In 2017, a second monograph was published by Oeno Gallery which included a survey of paintings from 1964 through to 2016, Milly Ristvedt, Colour and Meaning : an incomplete palette.

John Meredith Smith, known professionally as John Meredith, was a Canadian abstract expressionist painter. His trademark as a painter was rich, exciting colour which he combined with loosely figurative images of vertical stripes and forms or idiosyncratic calligraphy. He often used a small coloured ink drawing divided into squares as a template from which to develop his large canvases. In 1966, he began using details from still-wet drawings he had smudged – a way of working he regarded as his invention.
