Gradience is a rock band with varied influences. [1] Based in the Fargo-Moorhead area, Gradience has four members as of 2022: Darian Clark (bass guitar and vocals), John Dvorak (guitar), Ford Johnson (guitar), and Tom Nelson (drums). [1]
In 2022, Gradience independently released their debut album, THE CALL. [2] Their follow-up album, Come What May, [3] released in 2025. Along with the release of the album, the band has produced music videos [4] to go along with songs from their album, including "Parasite", [5] "Twisted", [6] "Comeback", [7] "Waiting", [8] "Sometimes", [9] and "In the Mirror". [10]
The members of Gradience met one another at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) in 2019. The original lineup consisted of three members: John Dvorak (lead vocals, lead guitar), Ford Johnson (bass guitar), and Tom Nelson (drums). This trio was first known as Jumping Elephants. They changed their name to Gradience before their first performance.
The term "gradience" is defined by Wiktionary as meaning, "The absence of a clear boundary, or the presence of a continuous spectrum of meaning, between two words or categories." [11] The group found this word to be reflective of their sound, with each of the members bringing their own varied influences from the musical spectrum.
Gradience had their first performance at MSUM's talent show, Dragons Got Talent. It was at this show they saw a solo performance by Darian Clark. After the show, Clark was recruited to be the lead singer and bass player for Gradience.
The group made their debut as a four-piece in the spring of 2020 at MSUM's Battle of the Bands. At this show they came in second place. In the fall of 2020, they won Dragons Got Talent. The following spring they returned to MSUM's Battle of the Bands and won.
Since their early days in Moorhead, MN, the band has traveled throughout the Midwest playing shows. As of 2024 the band has put their roots down in Minneapolis, MN, humbly adding their sound to the legacy of the Twin Cities music scene. They have played at venues such as Palmer's Bar, The Amsterdam, [12] Minnesota Music Cafe, [13] The Garage, and Klash Coffee. [14]
Their songs have been featured on both local and global radio stations such as Ken's FM, Calles Rock Corner, [15] Hoex Radio, [16] Wild Dogs Radio, [17] KFAI FM 90.3, [18] Radio Akadera 87.7 FM, [19] Radio Laser FM 95.9, [20] and Gateway 97.8 Community Radio. [21]
They have been featured on podcasts The YO Show [22] and Uptown Tonight. [23]
