Grainer evaporation process

The Grainer evaporation process is a method of producing salt.

This method uses shallow open pans with steam-heated immersion coils to evaporate the brine into salt.

Sometimes it is paired with a partial-vacuum, to speed evaporation.

Solar energy, burning a fossil fuel, waste heat from factories, and district heating systems are examples of convenient heat sources that can be used. An absorption refrigerator uses two coolants: the first coolant performs evaporative cooling and then is absorbed into the second coolant; heat is needed to reset the two coolants to their initial states. Flake salt refers to a category of salt characterized by their dry, plate-like ("lamellose") crystals. The salt was extracted by vacuum evaporation and was of a high quality. It was used for human consumption under the brandname "Selva" and in the pharmaceutical industry; New Cheshire was the only British company to supply salt for pharmaceutical use.
