Nebraska's 3rd congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Nebraska that encompasses its western three-fourths; it is one of the largest non-at-large districts in the country, covering nearly 65,000 square miles (170,000 km2), two time zones and 80 counties. It includes Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, North Platte, Alliance, and Scottsbluff. Additionally, it encompasses the Sandhills region and a large majority of the Platte River. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of R+29, it is by far the most Republican district in Nebraska, a state with an all-Republican delegation.

The history of the U.S. state of Nebraska dates back to its formation as a territory by the Kansas–Nebraska Act, passed by the United States Congress on May 30, 1854. The Nebraska Territory was settled extensively under the Homestead Act of 1862 during the 1860s, and in 1867 was admitted to the Union as the 37th U.S. state. The Plains Indians are the descendants of a long line of succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples in Nebraska who occupied the area for thousands of years before European arrival and continue to do so today.
U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) is part of the United States Numbered Highway System that runs for 3,112 miles (5,008 km) from Astoria, Oregon, to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Within the state of Nebraska, it is a state highway that travels 451.74 miles (727.01 km) west to east across the state from the Wyoming state line west of Bushnell to the Missouri River in Blair on the Iowa state line. Despite not intersecting Interstate 80 (I-80) even once, much of its length until Grand Island is closely parallel with the Interstate, not being more than one or two miles away. For most of its route, US 30 travels within the Platte River valley, adjacent to or near the river between Brule and Fremont, a distance of just over 300 miles (480 km). This corridor was also highly traveled during westward expansion along the California and Oregon trails, it was also used by the Pony Express and first transcontinental railroad. The landscape is dominated by vast agricultural fields within the fertile Platte River valley across the center of the state, while the western portion passes through higher plains and the eastern portion through the rolling hills adjacent to the Missouri River valley.

Central Community College is a two-year Nebraska public college with three campuses, in Columbus, Grand Island, and Hastings. In addition the college has learning centers in Holdrege, Kearney, and Lexington. Under the terms of a 1971 Nebraska state law, Central is one of six regional community colleges in the state, serving a group of 25 counties and funded by property taxes within those counties in addition to state aid, tuition and fees, and grants.
Platte Generating Station is a single unit 100 MW (megawatt) coal-fired power plant owned and operated by the City of Grand Island located in Grand Island, Nebraska. The plant entered commercial service in 1982.
