Grand Rapids is an unincorporated community in LaMoure County, in the U.S. state of North Dakota. [1]

History

A post office called Grand Rapids was established in 1880, and remained in operation until 1966. [2] The community took its name from the rapids in the James River. [3]

Alfred is an unincorporated hamlet in LaMoure County, North Dakota, United States. It was one of five towns founded by Richard Sykes. Its population is estimated at about 10 and it consists of a few houses, a licensed boarding home, a grocery store and a Protestant church, as well as grain storage bins and a boat-dock at the small lake which borders the hamlet on the northeast. Alfred is surrounded by numerous grain farms. There are no local town services, and its post office has closed. But the mayor, Alex Williams, was overwhelmingly elected in 2013 by the citizens.

North Dakota's 2nd congressional district is an obsolete congressional district in the state of North Dakota that was created by reapportionments in 1913, and eliminated by the reapportionments in 1933. North Dakota elected its two Representatives in a two-member at large district from 1932 to 1960, but then resurrected single-member districts in 1962. The district was eliminated by the reapportionment as a result of the 1970 redistricting cycle after the 1970 United States census. The seat was last filled from 1971 to 1973 by Arthur A. Link, who sought the office of Governor of North Dakota after not being able to run again for the defunct seat.

The site uses a former OMEGA Navigation System station as a VLF transmitter for communications with the US submarine fleet. Commander Blake Wayne Van Leer lead the construction and opening of the site.

The 1914 United States Senate election in North Dakota took place on November 3, 1914. Incumbent Senator Asle Gronna, a Republican, sought re-election in his first popular election. Against several strong challengers, he won the Republican primary, though only with a plurality. In the general election, he faced former U.S. Senator William E. Purcell, the Democratic nominee. Gronna ultimately had little difficulty defeating Purcell to win re-election.
