History

History of Grant Union High School Mascot - Grant Union High School, located in Sacramento, California, has a rich history that is reflected in its mascot. The school’s original mascot was the Phantom, but it was later changed to the Pacer. This change was made by a request from the student body to commemorate the championship thoroughbred racehorses bred at the Ben Ali Stables. The Ben Ali Stables were once the largest horse breeding ranch in the area, and their legacy is an integral part of the school’s heritage.

The mascot change symbolizes the school’s connection to its local history and the pride of its students in their community’s achievements. The Pacer represents not only the speed and agility of the thoroughbreds but also the spirit and determination of the students at Grant Union High School. WWII and American River College – Grant Union High School has a notable connection to World War II, as it was one of the five high schools in the nation selected for the Aeronautical Training Program in 19421. Additionally, the school had a Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) in 1943, which was a precursor to the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and played a significant role in supporting the war effort1.

As for its connection to American River College, Grant Union High School’s Grant Technical School became Grant Technical College in 1945, which was a ground school for flight training. This college eventually evolved into American River Junior College in 19551. 1931: Groundbreaking for the first school in California as part of the Work Progress Administration Project (WPA).

1932: Dedication of the school, originally named “Grant Union High School” in recognition of the Rancho Del Paso Land Grant and the founding school districts.

1942: During World War II, Grant Union High School’s Grant Technical School was selected for the Aeronautical Training Program and had a Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) in 19431. 1945: Grant Technical School became Grant Technical College, a ground school for flight training.

1955: Grant Technical College evolved into American River Junior College, which later moved to its current location and became part of the Los Rios Community College District in 1965.

1994/2006: Renovation of the campus stadium named in honor of the first principal and superintendent of schools, William Rutherford.
