Grazia Vittadini FRAeS , [1] FREng [2] (born 1969 in Milan) [3] is an Italian-German [4] aerospace executive. From May 2018 to 2021 she was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the aerospace and defence company Airbus. [3] [5] [6] Since November 2021 Vittadini has served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the aircraft engine and power systems company Rolls-Royce Holdings. [7]

Early life and education

Growing up in Italy and the United States, Vittadini took an early interest in aviation and motorcycling. [3] [8] She studied aeronautical engineering with a focus on aerodynamics at the Polytechnic University of Milan and holds a private pilot's license. [9] [10]

Career

Vittadini began her professional career working for the Italian industrial partner within the Eurofighter consortium. [5] In 2002, she joined Airbus Operations in Germany, where she occupied several senior management positions, [11] amongst others Chief Engineer on the Wing High Lift Devices of the A380. As head of Major Structural Tests, she was also instrumental in securing the A350 XWB's First Flight and Type Certification. Other positions held by Vittadini include head of Airframe Design and Technical Authority for all Airbus aircraft and head of Corporate Audit & Forensic. More recently, she was head of Engineering within the Airbus Defence and Space management board, reporting to Division CEO Dirk Hoke. [12]

In May 2018 Vittadini was appointed Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Airbus and a member of the Airbus Executive Committee with responsibility for the technical development and coordination of the entire group. [9] [8] [3] [5] In this role she has focused in particular on developing new technologies and solutions to succeed fossil driven propulsion technologies and to enable environmentally friendly flight (e.g. hybrid and electronic engines). [13] [3] [10] To address the growing complexity of aerospace technologies, Vittadini supports the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. [14] [15] [16]

She left Airbus in 2021 after 19 years with the company, with Sabine Klauke replacing her as CTO. [17] In November 2021, Grazia Vittadini joined Rolls-Royce as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) replacing Paul Stein. [18] In her current role, her focus lies on further developing the current product portfolio while decarbonizing the aerospace sector and driving sustainable aviation. [19] Rolls-Royce notably explores the possibilities for further efficiency gains in current and future generations of gas turbine technologies, [20] and in the longer term, hydrogen [21] and electrical propulsion. [22] Its other business units (Power Systems, Defence, Rolls-Royce Electrical and Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (SMR)) are also part of the company’s energy transition strategy. [23] [24] [25]

Amongst her additional roles, Vittadini served as director of the Airbus Foundation Board and as a member of the Inclusion and Diversity Steering Committee. [5] [6] She was also awarded the French "Légion d'honneur" (Legion of Honour) in 2017 and the "Woman of the Year in Business" award in 2018 by the French trade magazine L'Usine Nouvelle. [10] [26] Vittadini is also Member of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG and the Franco-German New Space start-up The Exploration Company. In addition, she is a member of the Senate of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and serves as advisor to the German Centre for Mobility of the Future (DZM) and the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology of Politecnico di Milano (DAER). [27] [4] Grazia Vittadini also holds a Doctor h.c. in Engineering and Technology from Cranfield University, UK, and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Airbus A380 is a very large wide-body airliner that was developed and produced by Airbus. It is the world's largest passenger airliner and only full-length double-deck jet airliner. Airbus studies started in 1988, and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the dominance of the Boeing 747 in the long-haul market. The then-designated A3XX project was presented in 1994; Airbus launched the €9.5 billion ($10.7 billion) A380 programme on 19 December 2000. The first prototype was unveiled in Toulouse on 18 January 2005, with its first flight on 27 April 2005. It then obtained its type certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 12 December 2006.

The British Aerospace 146 is a short-haul and regional airliner that was manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace, later part of BAE Systems. Production ran from 1983 until 2001. Avro International Aerospace manufactured an improved version known as the Avro RJ. Production for the Avro RJ version began in 1992. Later on, a further-improved version with new engines, the Avro RJX, was announced in 1997, but only two prototypes and one production aircraft were built before production ceased in 2001. With 387 aircraft produced, the Avro RJ/BAe 146 is the most successful British civil jet airliner program.

The Rolls-Royce Trent is a family of high-bypass turbofans produced by Rolls-Royce. It continues the three spool architecture of the RB211 with a maximum thrust ranging from 61,900 to 97,000 lbf . Launched as the RB-211-524L in June 1988, the prototype first ran in August 1990. Its first variant is the Trent 700 introduced on the Airbus A330 in March 1995, then the Trent 800 for the Boeing 777 (1996), the Trent 500 for the A340 (2002), the Trent 900 for the A380 (2007), the Trent 1000 for the Boeing 787 (2011), the Trent XWB for the A350 (2015), and the Trent 7000 for the A330neo (2018). The Airbus/Rolls-Royce/Siemens E-Fan X was a hybrid electric aircraft demonstrator being developed by a partnership of Airbus, Rolls-Royce plc and Siemens. Announced on 28 November 2017, it followed previous electric flight demonstrators towards sustainable transport for the European Commission’s Flightpath 2050 Vision. A BAe 146 flying testbed was to have one of its four Lycoming ALF502 turbofans replaced by a Siemens 2 MW (2,700 hp) electric motor, adapted by Rolls-Royce and powered by its AE2100 turboshaft, controlled and integrated by Airbus with a 2 t (4,400 lb) battery. In April 2020, the programme was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today's Airbus SE is the product of international consolidation in the European aerospace industry tracing way before the formation of the Airbus Industrie GIE consortium in 1970. In 2000, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) NV was established through the merger of Aerospatiale of France and DASA from Germany, and that subsequently bought Construcciones Aeronauticas from Spain. In addition to opther subsidiaries pertaining to security and space activities, EADS owned 100% of the pre-existing Eurocopter SA, established in 1992, as well as 80% of Airbus Industrie GIE. In 2001, Airbus Industrie GIE was reorganised as Airbus SAS, a simplified joint-stock company. In 2006, EADS acquired the remaining 20% shares of Airbus Industrie GIE from BAE Systems. EADS NV was renamed Airbus Group NV and SE in 2014, and 2015, respectively. Due to the commercial aircraft division's prominence within Airbus SE with it representing the largest part of the corporation's activities, Airbus S.A.S was published to be merged into the parent company in January 2017, but it was never done. Airbus SE remains therefore as the holding company for the commercial aircraft subsidiary Airbus SAS, while also being the parent company of the other two divisions Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters. The company was given its present name in April 2018.
