The Great Western Steam Laundry was a laundry in South Jordanhill in the western suburbs of Glasgow, Scotland. It was built in the late 1890s and served the miners in the area.
Laundry refers to the washing of clothing and other textiles. Laundry processes are often done in a room reserved for that purpose; in an individual home this is referred to as a laundry room, Laundry in Australian English or utility room. An apartment building or student hall of residence may have a shared laundry facility such as a tvättstuga. A stand-alone business is referred to as a self-service laundry. The material that is being washed, or has been laundered, is also generally referred to as laundry.
Jordanhill is an affluent area of the West End of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The area consists largely of terraced housing dating from the early to mid 20th century, with some detached and semi-detached homes and some modern apartments.
A suburb is a mixed-use or residential area, existing either as part of a city or urban area or as a separate residential community within commuting distance of a city. In most English-speaking countries, suburban areas are defined in contrast to central or inner-city areas, but in Australian English and South African English, suburb has become largely synonymous with what is called a "neighborhood" in other countries and the term extends to inner-city areas. In the United States, beyond the suburbs are exurbs, or "exurban areas", with less density but linked to the metropolitan area economically and by commuters.
The laundry ceased operations in the early 1960s and was destroyed by arson some years later. As the site had long been used for non-residential purposes, car showrooms were erected on the commercial site. In the 1980s a toy superstore opened on the site, causing traffic congestion along Crow Road and Balshgray Avenue before the attraction waned.
