Greece and the Philippines established its bilateral, diplomatic and trade relation in 1947. Greece has an embassy in Manila and the Philippines has an embassy in Athens.

Economic relations

The Greek city of Thessaloniki are open to enhancing business ties with the Philippines. Thessaloniki located in northern Greece, is the country's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political center, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe. [1]

Migration

According to official Greek statistics, there were 5,000 Filipinos in Greece in 1991, which declined to 2,000 by 1996. In reality, there were many more working in the country illegally. [2] [3] The Philippine community have set up a school for their children in downtown Athens. [4]

A large proportion are women (81% in 1999), who generally find employment as domestic workers. [5]

In 2009 there were 30,000 Filipinos in Greece. [6]

Greek Community in Philippines

According to some historical accounts, there were already Greek settlers in the country as early as the 18th century. Most were sailors, traders, and fishermen.[2]

During the early 20th century, some Greek sailors and immigrants came to the country and settled. One group came to the city of Legazpi.[3] Their descendants on the island of Luzon make up no more than 10 families, who retain their Greek identities and have become distinguished public figures and intellectuals in the community.

Adamson University in Manila was founded by a Greek immigrant, George Lucas Adamson. He also founded the first Greek Orthodox church in the Philippines, two paper mills, and a shipping company.[4] Currently, Greek immigrants and expatriates come into the country to work in businesses or enter as diplomats, tourists, or as friends or family of Filipinos. The Greek community in the Philippines also helps with the Philippine Orthodox Church (with the help of the Hellenic Orthodox Community-Foundation Inc Of Philippines). However, currently, the Greek population in the Philippines is officially unknown but some Greeks are living in the capital, where the location of the Exarchate of the Philippines where there is a small Greek church founded by the Greek community. But during 2013 the Greek embassy estimated about 120 Greeks permanently residing in the Philippines as immigrants, migrants, and ex-pats. [7] Most of them work in shipping and trade, [8] most of them are married to Filipinos and have a permanent residency in the Philippines. However, the current community is small, and very few know about it. As of 2018, the Greek Community in the Philippines has created a Facebook group, called Greeks in the Philippines, Έλληνες στις Φιλιππίνες. Now there is an estimate of 100 Greeks living in the Philippines. [9]

Greek–British relations are foreign relations between Greece and the United Kingdom. Greece and the United Kingdom maintain excellent and cordial relations and consider each other an ally with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, paying an official visit to London in 2021. Greece and the United Kingdom are both members of the United Nations, NATO and the Council of Europe. The United Kingdom is also viewed very favorably in Greece. According to a global opinion poll, 77% of Greeks view the United Kingdom favourably, while only 10% don't. The British have a very positive opinion of Greece as well. 66% of the British view Greece positively, while only 3% view it negatively, making Greece one of the most liked countries in the UK.

Greece and Ukraine have deep ties due to Orthodox Christianity and enjoy strong diplomatic relations, due to Greece’s active diplomatic support for Ukraine over the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Greece is also one of the main supporters of Ukraine’s entry into NATO and the European Union. Greece recognized Ukraine on December 31, 1991. Both countries established diplomatic relations in 1992. Greece opened an embassy in Kyiv in 1993, general-consulates were set up in Mariupol and Odesa. Ukraine has opened an embassy in Athens and since April 2004 a general-consulate in Thessaloniki. Both countries are full members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. There is a large Greek community living in Ukraine. Ukraine was first settled by the Greeks as early as 500 B.C. The Ukrainian city of Odesa was founded by ancient Greek colonists, being also the place where the Filiki Eteria secret organization was founded.

Both Greece and Spain are members of the European Union, NATO, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the OECD, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the United Nations.

Greece–India relations, also known as Indo–Greek relations, are the international relations between the Republic of India and the Hellenic Republic. Greece has an embassy in New Delhi and three honorary consulates in Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. India has an embassy in Athens and an honorary consulate in Thessaloniki. As of 2023, the relation between the two countries is closer than ever and is considered historical and strategic by both parts.

Greece–Nigeria relations are the bilateral relations between Greece and Nigeria. Nigeria has an embassy in Athens. Greece established a diplomatic mission in Nigeria in 1970, and today has an embassy in Abuja and a consulate in Lagos. Trade between the two countries is imbalanced, with imports from Greece to Nigeria exceeding exports. Greek-owned tankers have an important role in shipping Nigerian oil and natural gas, its main exports. Recently a Greek tanker was involved a dispute over crude oil smuggling. Greek-controlled companies have invested US$5 billion in the Nigerian economy. There is a small Greek business community in Lagos.

Greek settlement in the Philippines is a small community of descendants of ethnic Greeks who settled the country since the Spanish colonization of the country. The Greek community in the Philippines also includes Filipino citizens of Greek ancestry along with Greek expatriates and immigrants and their descendants of full or partial Greek ancestry. This also includes a small number of Greek Americans, Greek Australians and Greek Cypriots.

The Philippines–Thailand relations refers to the bilateral relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Thailand. The Philippines established formal diplomatic relations with Thailand on June 14, 1949. The relations between the two are described as warm and friendly. Thailand is one of the Philippines' major trade partners and one of the Philippines' sources of rice through Thai exports. Bilateral relations continues to be strengthened through talks and agreements on economic, security and cultural matters including concerns on rice trade, fight on drugs and human trafficking. Thailand has an embassy in Manila and an honorary consulate in Cebu, while the Philippines maintains an embassy in Bangkok.

An agreement that was signed on April 25, 1955, led to a dynamic cooperation between the two countries. Germany has an embassy in Manila and an honorary consulate in Cebu, while the Philippines has an embassy in Berlin, a Consulate General in Frankfurt, and Honorary Consulates in Essen, Munich and Stuttgart. Germany is the top trading partner of the Philippines in the European Union after the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Armenia–Philippines relations</span> Bilateral relations

Bilateral relations exist between Armenia and the Philippines. Relations between the two countries have gradually improved since it was established on May 20, 1992. Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan visited the Philippines in 2012, making him the highest Armenian government official to ever visit the Philippines to date. Armenian-Philippine relations were further strengthened upon the visit of Armenian non-resident ambassador Raisa Vardanyan to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario on March 19, 2015. The most recent diplomatic engagement involved commitment to increase trade, investment and educational and scientific cooperation between the two countries.
