Greengate is a neighbourhood located in Plaistow, in East London within the London Borough of Newham. A notable feature of the area is the Greengate House, previously the home to a YMCA and an Art college. The Barking Road runs nearby.
Historically, Greengate was in the ancient parish of West Ham, within the hundred of Becontree, and part of the historic county of Essex.

The A658 is a road in the UK running from Bradford, West Yorkshire (53.7949°N 1.7487°W), to Knaresborough, North Yorkshire (54.0065°N 1.4327°W), passing along the way Leeds Bradford International Airport, where it runs through a tunnel directly under the main runway. The road starts near to the cathedral in Bradford, crossing the A650 almost immediately as it heads north westwards from the city. The A658 originally terminated south of the village of Pannal at the junction with the A61, but was extended when the south Harrogate and Knaresborough bypass was built and the road now ends east of Knaresborough where it meets the A59.

The area is bordered by Idle and Thackley to the north-west, and the large council estate known as Thorpe Edge to the west. To the south of Greengates is Ravenscliffe housing estate with the village of Eccleshill beyond that. The village of Apperley Bridge lies to the north. To the east in the Leeds Metropolitan District is the village of Calverley.

Katong was a 1,923 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1944 by Lübecker Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, Lübeck, Germany as Peter Rickmers for Rickmers Line. She was seized as a war prize at Stettin in May 1945 and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as an Empire ship and renamed Empire Colne. In 1947 she was sold to Singapore and renamed Katong. She was sold in 1971 and renamed Greengate. In 1972 she was sold and renamed Ever Glory. She was scrapped in 1974.

St Saviour's Church is a Church of England church in Forest Gate, east London. It was opened by Emmanuel Church, Forest Gate as a mission hall in 1880, with a separate parish and a permanent church following three years later. Its first vicar was Henderson Burnside, one of the first Anglican missionaries in Japan. It opened a mission at "365 Railway Arches" in 1903. Its parish is now known as 'St Saviour's and St James's, Forest Gate' after the area formerly forming the parish of St James' Church, Forest Gate was transferred to it in 2014 - the congregation from St James', however, transferred to St Paul's Church, Stratford, also in 2014.

The West Ham station attack was a bombing and shooting attack at West Ham station in east London on 15 March 1976. A 5 lb (2.3 kg) bomb on a Metropolitan line train exploded prematurely in the front carriage of the train, injuring seven passengers. The bomb detonated prior to reaching the City of London, where it was thought the intended target was Liverpool Street station at rush hour. Adrian Vincent Donnelly, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member, then shot Post Office engineer Peter Chalk in the chest, and killed train driver Julius Stephen, who had attempted to catch him. Donelly exited the station to the street and threatened people with his revolver before PC Raymond Kiff caught up with him. Shouting "You English bastards!", Donelly shot himself in the chest, but he survived and was apprehended by Kiff.
