As part of an emphasis on prioritizing women's football and increasing the number of female players in Greenland, the Football Association of Greenland established a women's national team in 2021 with the goal of touring internationally the following year. The federation named and Bent Petersen as first-ever head coach and Inunnguaq Geronne as assistant coach. [2] By March 2022, the team had traveled to Denmark to compete against club teams, but could not challenge the Danes because Denmark did not have a women's national team. [3] The trip included victories over some of the country's best youth clubs, including B.93 and Solrød FC. [4]
The team took part in an official international competition for the first time in June 2024 as part of a six-team Futsal Week tournament in Croatia. [5] Greenland opened the competition with a debut 1–12 defeat to Poland on 11 June 2024. That result was followed up by 0–13 defeat to Italy. [6] The team's third match ended as a 4–11 defeat to Iran. [7] In the second match of the placement play-off series, Greenland were narrowly defeated again by Morocco, this time by a scoreline of 5–7 to earn sixth place in the team's first international outing. It is the organization of Danish football clubs and runs the professional Danish football leagues, alongside the men's and women's national teams. The Greenland national football team represents Greenland in non-FIFA international tournaments. It is controlled by the Football Association of Greenland. Although it has the same status as the Faroe Islands within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is not, unlike the Faroe Islands national football team, a member of FIFA nor of any continental confederation and therefore is not eligible to enter the World Cup or other sanctioned tournaments. Most of the matches they have played have been against the Faroe Islands and Iceland, but neither of the two consider those games full internationals. In May 2024, it was announced that Greenland had officially applied to become a member of CONCACAF.
The Denmark women's national football team represents Denmark and Greenland in international women's football. The Greenland Football Association applied to join CONCACAF, a continental body of FIFA, on 13 May 2024.
Association football is the most popular and the national sport of Greenland. It was brought to Greenland by Danish settlers. Because of the climatic conditions, Greenland is unable to support any grass pitches so games are played on artificial turf. The national stadium is the Nuuk Stadium in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk. There is a proposal to replace Nuuk Stadium with a new stadium, named Arktisk Stadion.
The Nordic Futsal Cup is the Nordic countries futsal Championship competition hosted by UEFA.
The Arktisk Stadion is a proposed association football stadium which would replace Nuuk Stadium as the national stadium of Greenland. The stadium is proposed, in part, to allow Greenland to participate in FIFA and CONCACAF as the organizations' strict guidelines on stadiums are a barrier to admittance. It is expected to seat several thousand spectators and be fully enclosed with heating. The stadium was, at one point, expected to be completed by 2020; however, as of November 2019, the Greenlandic government was still seeking investors to help finance the stadium's construction. Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and its renowned architect David Zahle designed the stadium as part of the larger proposed cultural center. In 2016 the firm was paid 380,000 Danish krone (€51,000) for planning and design work, with the majority going toward feasibility studies.
