History

The company was founded by Jean Griswold in 1982. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] The fledgling corporation's first name was Overnight Sitting Service. [6] [7] The company was soon renamed Special Care Inc., [8] then renamed Griswold Home Care. [9] [10]

According to Inc. (magazine) by 1989 the company was a $10-million, multi-state business. [11] In 2002, while still known as Special Care, the company had 5 offices in the Philadelphia area run out of the corporate offices, with offices elsewhere operated as franchises. Revenues were $80 million. On the 20th anniversary of its founding, April 26, 2002, the company name officially changed to Griswold Home Care. [12]

In 2005 it was described by the Philadelphia Business Journal as "the nation's largest, privately owned nonmedical home-care company." [13] In 2009 it had 103 franchises. [7] [14]

In 1995 the company drew negative attention when one of its home care employees was arrested while buying illegal drugs, and press reports focused on the fact that since the company does not provide medical services, its employees are not required to be certified and may not be closely supervised. [15]

Griswold was among the corporations that pushed for better government oversight of the home care industry. [16]

Management

Griswold hired Ray Uhlhorn as chief operating officer in 2002. [17]

PRISM was an American regional premium cable television channel in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Launched in September 1976, PRISM was primarily distributed through area cable systems, although it was also available through a scrambled over-the-air signal on WWSG-TV from 1983 to 1985.

Liberty Place is a skyscraper complex in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The complex is composed of a 61-story, 945-foot (288 m) skyscraper called One Liberty Place, a 58-story, 848-foot (258 m) skyscraper called Two Liberty Place, a two-story shopping mall called the Shops at Liberty Place, and the 14-story Westin Philadelphia Hotel. Prior to the construction of Liberty Place, there was a gentlemen's agreement not to build any structure in Center City higher than the statue of William Penn on top of Philadelphia City Hall. The tradition lasted until 1984 when developer Willard G. Rouse III of Rouse & Associates announced plans to build an office building complex that included two towers taller than City Hall. There was a great amount of opposition to the construction of the towers with critics believing breaking the height limit would lead to construction of many more tall skyscrapers, ruining the livability and charm of Center City. Despite the opposition, construction of One Liberty Place was approved and the first phase of the project began in 1985 and was completed in 1987. One Liberty Place became the city's first skyscraper.

SportsChannel Philadelphia was an American regional sports network owned as a joint venture between Rainbow Sports, a unit of the Rainbow Media subsidiary of Cablevision Systems Corporation, and NBC, and operated as an affiliate of SportsChannel. Operating as a sister network of the premium service PRISM and headquartered in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, the channel provided regional coverage of sports events involving professional sports teams based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and college and high school sports events throughout the Delaware Valley region.

Sands Atlantic City was a casino and hotel that operated from August 13, 1980 until November 11, 2006 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was formerly known as the Brighton Hotel & Casino. Jean Griswold

Jean C. Griswold was an American businesswoman. She was the founder of Griswold Home Care, a corporation founded in 1982 to provide non-medical, in-home care for the elderly and infirm. She was the subject of ongoing press attention because she founded a successful corporation despite using a wheelchair because she suffered from multiple sclerosis.

Curtis J. Jones Jr. American politician

Curtis J. Jones Jr is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Philadelphia City Council. In 2007, he was elected to represent the 4th District, which covers parts of North, Northwest, and West Philadelphia. He has served as Majority Leader (2012-2016) and Majority Whip since 2020.
