The formation of Groupe Lacroix goes back to a joint master class visit of the founding members to the Russian avant-garde composer Edison Denisov as part of the Lucerne Festival at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Sommer 1993. [1]
The group was then joined in autumn 1993 by six well-known Swiss composers in the Centre musical de la Fondation Hindemith Chalet de Lacroix (today Hindemith-Musikzentrum of the Hindemith-Stiftung . [2] Among the founding members were Michael Baumgartner (who did not become an official member), John Wolf Brennan from Lucerne, Jean-Luc Darbellay from Bern, Christian Henking from Bern, Stephan Sabotta (who did not become an official member) and Michael Schneider from Aarau. In 1994 Marianne Schroeder from Basel, 1996 Michael Radanovics from Vienna and 2000 Alfons Karl Zwicker from St. Gallen joined in. In 1999, guest composers were Marcel Wengler (Luxembourg) and in 2003 Thüring Bräm, who is also the organiser of the group. Radanowics and Brennan are specialized in Jazz. Schroeder follows the Minimal music by John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Giacinto Scelsi and Galina Ustvolskaya. [4]
The aim of the group of composers is to establish a joint dialogue. According to their own statements, the core idea is: "that the individuality of artistic expression and the exchange beyond the concert hall and the desk are not only not mutually exclusive, but can also be mutually enriching. [3]
International cooperation took place in Lucerne in 1993, in Moscow in 1995/96 (at the Moscow Alternativa Festival ), in Dublin, Blonay, Fribourg and Lucerne in 1997 and in Weggis and Leipzig in 1999] (at the MDR Musiksommer). [5] [6] [2] Since the Leipzig concerts there has been an intensive cooperation in a "Klee-Project“ with the Ensemble Sortisatio.
Luc Ferrari was a French composer of Italian heritage and a pioneer in musique concrète and electroacoustic music. He was a founding member of RTF's Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRMC), working alongside composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry.
The MDR-Sinfonieorchester is a German radio orchestra based in Leipzig. It is the radio orchestra of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the public broadcaster for the German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. It is one of the oldest Radio orchestras in the world and the oldest in Germany. It was founded in Leipzig, Germany in 1923. Apart from a short interruption during World War II, it has been the main orchestra of the Central German Broadcasting Company (MDR) since 1924. The orchestra performs concerts in Leipzig at the Gewandhaus.
Ensemble Sortisatio is a quartet founded by violist Matthias Sannemüller in 1992 in Leipzig, Germany. Its members are mostly soloists at the MDR Symphony Orchestra. They have specialized in contemporary classical music.
Jean-Luc Darbellay is a Swiss composer, conductor, clarinetist and physician. He was chairman of the Swiss Society for New Music and board member of the International Society for Contemporary Music. Darbellay is a member of the composers group: Groupe Lacroix. He has published about 150 works. He was awarded with the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Marianne Schroeder is a Swiss pianist and composer. She studied with Giacinto Scelsi. She played at Carnegie Hall, Lucerne Festival and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. She worked with John Cage and Shigeru Kan-no.
Thüring Bräm is a Swiss composer and conductor.
Max Eugen Keller is a Swiss composer, jazz pianist and improvising musician. He was one of the first free-jazz musicians in Switzerland. Since 2007 he is chairman of the Swiss Society for New Music.
Martina Koppelstetter is a German mezzo-soprano in opera and concert. She is particularly interested in contemporary music.
The Biel Solothurn Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1969 and has since gained an important place within the Swiss music scene. It is based in the Swiss cities of Biel-Bienne and Solothurn.
