Career

Xiaogang's first feaure film, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains , closed the 58th edition of the Critics' Week at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. [2]

During the filming of his first feature, he discovered that a family member had fallen victim to a fraudulent pyramid scheme, which became the catalyst for his second film, Dwelling by the West Lake. [3]

In 2023, Dwelling by the West Lake was shortlisted for the Akira Kurosawa Award at the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival. [4]

His feature, Spring Comes Along, was the main promotional film at the 14th Beijing International Film Festival. [5]

<i>Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains</i> Painting by Huang Gongwang

Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is one of the few surviving works by Chinese painter Huang Gongwang (1269–1354) and is considered to be among his greatest works. Painted between 1348 and 1350, the painting was burnt into two pieces in 1650. Today, one piece is kept in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou, while the other piece is kept in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Put together, the entire painting would measure 691.3 centimetres (272.2 in) in length.

Critics' Week, until 2008 called International Critics' Week, is a parallel section to the Cannes Film Festival organized by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics. It was created in 1962, after the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics's successful campaign for Shirley Clarke's The Connection to be screened at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival. Father is a 2000 Chinese film directed by the writer Wang Shuo. To date, it is Wang's first and only directorial effort. The film is based on Wang's own novel, Wo Shi Ni Baba. Despite being partially backed by the state-run Beijing Film Studio, Father suffered from years of bureaucratic red tape due to being seen as an interpretation of as deconstructing authority in China. Made in 1996, the film was not screened until 2000, when it surreptitiously premiered at the 2000 Locarno International Film Festival.

I Am Not Pan Jinlian, known in English as I Am Not Madame Bovary, is a 2016 Chinese comedy film directed by Feng Xiaogang and written by Liu Zhenyun, based on Liu's 2012 novel I Did Not Kill My Husband. The film stars Fan Bingbing, Zhang Jiayi, Yu Hewei, Dong Chengpeng and Guo Tao. It was selected to be screened in the Special Presentations section at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. and won the award for Best Achievement in Directing at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. It was released in China on 18 November 2016.
