Gudaibiya

Gudaibiya (Qudaibiya) is a neighbourhood located in Manama, the capital city of Bahrain. [1]

An older part of the city, yet a busy area, Gudaibiya is a bustling and highly cosmopolitan area, home to many new arrivals in the Kingdom. Gudaibiya houses embassies and the National Assembly (Bahrain). It has large numbers of Indian, Filipino, Ethiopian and Pakistani residents. It is the site of the Ebrahim Al-Arrayedh Poetry House, [2] a leading cultural centre, which is the house of the late Bahraini poet, Ebrahim Al-Arrayedh. It contains the Al-Qudaibiya Palace.

Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nonoo served as the Bahraini Ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2013. She was appointed to the position by decree of Foreign Affairs Minister Khaled Ben Ahmad Al-Khalifa. Nonoo is the first Jew, and third woman, to be appointed ambassador of Bahrain. She is also the first Jewish ambassador of any Middle Eastern Arab country, and the first female Bahraini ambassador to the United States.

Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain, is an island country in Western Asia. It is situated on the Persian Gulf, and comprises a small archipelago made up of 50 natural islands and an additional 33 artificial islands, centered on Bahrain Island which makes up around 83 percent of the country's landmass. Bahrain is situated between Qatar and the northeastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the King Fahd Causeway. The current population of Bahrain is 1,870,817 as of May 14, 2023, based on elaborations of the latest United Nations data, of whom 712,362 are Bahraini nationals. Al-Qudaibiya Palace or Gudaibiya Palace is a palace in Gudaibiya, Manama, Bahrain. Located off Bani Otbah Avenue and Al Fatih Highway, it lies west of the Al Fateh Grand Mosque and southeast of the Old Palace of Manama and the Andalus Garden and Manama Cemetery. It is a light pink palace with a pearl-coloured, onion-shaped dome. For decades the palace has hosted some of the most important political and economy-related conferences in the country, having a prominent role in the foreign affairs of the country. The proclamation of the accession of Salman Al Khalifa, after his father's death in February 1942 was made from the steps of the Gudaibiya Palace, read by the ruler's uncle, Shaikh Mohammad bin Isa. It has a major political function; the King's cabinet usually meets every Sunday at the palace and the Prime Minister has an office at the palace.

The literature of Bahrain has a strong tradition in the country. Most traditional writers and poets write in the classical Arabic style, contemporary poets that write in this style include Ali al-Sharqawi, Qassim Haddad, Ebrahim Al-Arrayedh, and Ahmad Muhammed Al Khalifa. In recent years, the number of younger poets influenced by western literature are rising, most writing in free verse or prose poetry, and often including political or personal content. Almost all publications of poetry in the country are in Arabic, with poetry rarely published in English without requiring prior translation. Ali al-Sharqawi, a decorated longtime poet, is considered by many to be the literary icon of Bahrain. The country's local writing society, the Bahrain Writers Association, was founded in 1969.

The theatre of Bahrain in its present form originated in the early 20th century, after the introduction of formal education in the country. Though shadow plays and puppet shows were previously widespread in Bahrain, European-style drama plays were first introduced in schools and plays written by Arab dramatists would be later included in the school curriculum.

Historic and current bilateral relationship exist between Bahrain and Japan. Diplomatic relations were first established in 1972, and since then they have had increasing economic, cultural, and military cooperation, with Japan becoming one of the major trading partners of Bahrain. Several high-level official visits have taken place, including by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Japan in 2012, Crown Prince Salman in 2013, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Bahrain in 2013, with the governments of both countries expressing their intent to continue to increase their bilateral relations.
