Gujarat Anti-corruption Bureau (Gujarat ACB) (Gujarati : ગુજરાત લાંચ રુશ્વત વિરોધી બ્યુરો) is a government agency having oversight responsibilities with objectives of ensuring compliance with codes of duty and thereby to make government functions corruption-free. It was established on 30 September 1963 after the bifurcation of former Bombay State and creation of Gujarat state. The main purpose of Gujarat ACB is to eliminate corrupt practices from Gujarat Government. [3]

Administration

Gujarat ACB is an agency under Home ministry of Government of Gujarat. It is headed by an Indian Police Service(IPS) officer. Current Chief of Gujarat ACB is Anupam Singh Gehlot. [4] To make the bureau more effective, there are 7 regional units spread across the state:

  1. Ahmedabad
  2. Mehsana
  3. Vadodara
  4. Surat
  5. Rajkot
  6. Junagadh
  7. Bhuj (Includes border unit)

There are 108 police inspectors serving in 34 ACB police stations. There is an ACB police station in all districts of Gujarat except Dang. [5]

Daya Nayak joined Mumbai police - then known as Bombay - in 1995, and rose to fame as an encounter-specialist in the late 1990s. As a member of the Detection Unit, he gunned down more than 80 gangsters of the Mumbai underworld. In 2006, he was temporarily suspended, based on allegations of criminal links and disproportionate income by a journalist. The Anti-Corruption Bureau could not find any evidence against him, and he was reinstated by the Mumbai Police in 2012. He was transferred to Nagpur in January 2014, and suspended in July 2015 after he reportedly declined to join his new posting at Nagpur fearing his family's safety. The transfer order was cancelled in August 2015, and Nayak was reinstated in January 2016.

Sanjiv Bhatt is a former Indian Police Service officer of the Gujarat-cadre. He is known for his role in filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India against the then Chief Minister of the Government of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, concerning Modi's alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots. He claimed to have attended a meeting, during which Modi allegedly asked top police officials to let Hindus vent their anger against the Muslims. However, the Special Investigation Team appointed by the Supreme Court of India concluded that Bhatt did not attend any such meeting, and dismissed his allegations.

Also referred to as the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, the Indian helicopter bribery scandal by Congress led UPA Government refers to a multimillion-dollar corruption case in India, wherein money was paid to middlemen and Indian officials in 2006 and 2007 to purchase helicopters for high level politicians. As per the CBI, this amounted to 2.5 billion (US$31 million), transferred through bank accounts in the UK and UAE.

Jeetendra Ghadge is an Indian activist based in Girgaon, Mumbai. Instrumental in exposing a police-politician nexus and working towards implementing police reforms. A full-time whistleblower Ghadge has also uncovered poor performance in controlling corruption by Anti-Corruption Bureau, Mumbai. As a RTI activist his work on uncovering alleged corruption in dam construction has led, according to the Times of India, to harassment of Ghadge.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ishrat Jahan encounter killing</span> Extra-judicial killing by police in Gujarat, India

In the Ishrat Jahan case, officers of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch and members of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of Ahmedabad were accused by the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of unlawfully shooting four people to death in an "encounter killing" on 15 June 2004. Those killed in the incident were Ishrat Jahan Raza, a 19-year-old woman from Mumbra, Maharashtra, and three men – Javed Ghulam Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar. The police claimed that Ishrat Jahan and her associates were Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives involved in a plot to assassinate the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

Rakesh Asthana is a retired Indian police office from the Indian Police Service (IPS). He was on the 1984 batch of Gujarat cadre who served as the Special Director at the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI). In July 2021, he was appointed as Police Commissioner of Delhi. He retired on 31 July 2022 after an extension of 1 year.

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Gujarat from 1 to 5 December 2022 in two phases, to elect 182 members of 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 8 December 2022.

Rajnish Rai was a Deputy inspector general of police for the Indian Police Service. He began service after graduating with the 1992 cadre. In 2019 he joined the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as an assistant professor.

Rajkumar Pandian is an Indian Police Service officer. He came to attention over claims in the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. From 2016 he was Inspector-general of police in Junagadh, even while the Sohrabuddin case was in courts. In 2018 the Bombay High Court upheld his discharge from this case.
