Guntars Mankus (born 5 July 1969) is a Latvian orienteer, rogainer and adventure racer.
At the 5th World Rogaining Championships in Lesná, Czech Republic in 2002 he won a gold medal and the title of the World Rogaining Champion in Mixed Open category in team with Anita Liepina and Raimonds Lapiņš. [1] At 6th World Rogaining Championships in Arizona, United States in 2004 the same team won a bronze medal in Mixed Open category. At 7th World Rogaining Championships in Warrumbungles, Australia they regained the title of the World Rogaining Champion in Mixed Open category. [2] At 13th World Rogaining Championships in Kiilopää, Finland he won a silver medal in Mixed Open category in team with Irita Puķīte. [3] At 18th World Rogaining Championships in Sierra Nevada, California, USA he won a gold medal in Mixed Open category in team with Irita Puķīte.
In 2005 he won a gold medal at the European Rogaining Championships in Mixed Open category in team with Anita Liepina in Nõva, Estonia. [4] In 2016 he won a gold medal at the European Rogaining Championships in Mixed Open category in team with Irita Puķīte in Aralar Range, Spain.
In 2014 he won a gold medal and the title of the World Champion in precision orienteering (PreO Open) and a bronze medal as a member of the Latvian team at the World Trail Orienteering Championships in Lavarone, Italy. [5]
Simone Niggli-Luder is a Swiss orienteering athlete who has twice won all four women's competitions at the world championships. She is widely seen as one of the greatest orienteers of all time.
Rogaining is an orienteering sport of long distance cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. In a rogaine, teams of two to five people choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximising their score. Teamwork, endurance, competition and an appreciation for the natural environment are features of the sport. Championship rogaines are 24 hours long, but rogaines can be as short as two hours.
Thierry Gueorgiou is a French orienteer who holds the record for gold medals won at the World Orienteering Championships for a male athlete, with 14 gold medals between 2003 and 2017. Gueorgiou has won more than 20 gold medals in international competitions, including the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) middle distance event a record eight times: 2003–2005, 2007–2009, 2011 and 2017.
Annika Viilo is a Finnish orienteering competitor and world champion. She won a gold medal at the 1995 World Orienteering Championships in Detmold with the Finnish relay team. She received a silver medal on the Classic distance at the 1993 World Championships in West Point, and also a silver medal with the relay team, and she received a bronze medal with the relay team in 1989 (Skaraborg).
Michal Smola is a Czech orienteering competitor, silver medalist from the world championships, and junior world champion. He became Junior World Champion in the short distance in Nove Mesto na Morave in 2000, and with the Czech team in relay in 2000 and in 2001. His best achievement by September 2009 is silver medal in the middle distance at the 2008 World Orienteering Championship in Olomouc.
Valters Āboliņš is a Latvian rogaining competitor and former football defender. He won a silver medal in the XO group at the 8th World Rogaining Championship in Karula National Park, Estonia. His teammates were Andris Ansabergs and Mara Leitane. He also spend two years in Latvia Second league football club Hemat.
Mika Tervala is a Finnish mountain bike orienteering competitor, World Champion and European Champion. He won individual gold medals at the 2002, 2006 and 2007 World Championships, and a gold medal in the relay in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Mika coaches the Finnish national mountain bike orienteering teams since spring 2008.
Michaela Gigon is an Austrian mountain bike orienteer and several times world champion. She has competed at all World MTB Orienteering Championships from 2002 to 2010, won individual gold medals in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010, and in relay in 2009.
Anita Liepiņa is a former Latvian race walker and long-distance runner. Since 2002 she has also practised rogaining.
Ida Bobach is a Danish orienteering competitor who was Junior World Champion in 2009, and became triple Junior World Champion from 2010, when she won the sprint, long distance and the relay. She represents the club OK Pan Århus, and since 2007, has received training from Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. In 2015 she won gold medals at the World Championships in the long and Relay.
International Rogaining Federation (IRF) is the peak international body for the sport of rogaining. The aims of the IRF are to promote rogaining worldwide, maintain the culture and the rules of the sport.
Silver Eensaar is an Estonian orienteer, rogainer and adventure racer. At the 10th World Rogaining Championships in Přebuz, Czech Republic in 2012 he won a gold medal and the title of the World Rogaining Champion in team with his brother Rain Eensaar in Men's teams category. At 11th World Rogaining Championships in Alol, Pskov oblast Russia in 2013 they successfully defended the title of the World Rogaining Champion. At 12th World Rogaining Championships in Black Hills, South Dakota in 2014 they won the third consecutive title of World Rogaining Champions.
The World Rogaining Championships are the championships of the International Rogaining Federation (IRF) and the pinnacle rogaining event in the world. The championships are organised by the national rogaining organisation chosen by the IRF as the host of that particular championships.
