He established a Sikh sect in the 1980s,which was opposed by mainline Khalsa Sikhs as insulting to their faith. In 2001,his followers published their own holy text Bhavsagar Granth,and allegedly insulted the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib. This sparked violence against Bhaniara's followers. The Government of Punjab banned Bhavsagar Granth,and arrested and jailed Bhaniara.

The Kartarpur Corridor is a visa-free border crossing and religious corridor,connecting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib,near Narowal in Pakistan to Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak,Gurdaspur district,Punjab,India. The crossing allows devotees from India to visit the gurdwara in Kartarpur,Pakistan,4.7 kilometres from the India–Pakistan border on the Pakistani side without a visa. However,Pakistani Sikhs are unable to use the border crossing,and cannot access Dera Baba Nanak on the Indian side without first obtaining an Indian visa or unless they work there.

He is a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly since 2024,representing Chabbewal Assembly constituency as a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. The constituency was formerly held by his father Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal,who had vacated the seat after being elected as a Lok Sabha MP from the Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha constituency.
