Gurugu is a community in Sagnarigu Municipal in the Northern Region of Ghana. [1] Its neighboring communities are Jisonaayili, Sognaayili, Kumbuyili and Chogu-Yapalsi. [2]

It is located along the Tamale-Kumbungu road with linear settlement under the leadership of a Chief. [3]

History

Gurugu is located in the traditional lands of the Dagomba people. It is the seat of the paramount chief of the Lingbunga and has been since Ghana's independence in 1957.

The Dagombas or Dagbamba are a Gur ethnic group of northern Ghana, numbering more than 3.1 million people. The term Dagbamba is also used to refer to other descendants of Naa Gbewaa including the Mamprusi and Nanumba. They inhabit the Northern Region of Ghana in the Guinea savanna region. They speak the Dagbani language which belongs to the Mole-Dagbani sub-group of the Gur languages. There are more than 3 million native speakers of Dagbani. The Dagomba are historically related to the Mossi people. The Mossi Kingdoms were founded by Yennenga, a daughter of the founder of the Dagbon Kingdom, Naa Gbewaa. The Mohi/Mossi now have their homeland in central present-day Burkina Faso. Aside the Mossi, the Dagombas are the progenitors of the Bouna state of Ivory Coast, and the Dagaaba states of Upper West Region of Ghana. The homeland of the Dagomba is called Dagbon and now covers about 20,000 km2 in area.

However, on 15 March 2018, it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become West Mamprusi Municipal District. Jisonaayili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a linear settlement concentrated along the Jisonayili Road that divides the community into two halves. The immediate neighboring communities include Kanvili, Gurugu, Chogu-Yapalsi and Kamina Barracks. The community is served by a public library located in the Jisonaayili Community Center.

Sorugu is a community in Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Katariga is a small community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It has a dispersed settlement having Kumbuyili, Sugashee and Gurugu as its neighboring communities. Farming is the most common occupation in this community. It is one of the few communities headed by a female(Tindana) in the Northern Region.

Malishegu is a nucleated farming community located along the Tamale-Kumbungu trunk road in Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is home to Malshegu Sacred Grove - a religious center and one of the last remaining closed canopy forests in the savannah regions of West Africa.

Choggu-Yapalsi is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a nucleated but populated community located along the Tamale-Kumbungu road having Jisonaayili, Gurugu and Choggu Mmanaayili as its immediate neighbors.

Kumbuyili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a dispersed settlement located along the Tamale-Kumbungu road having Gurugu, Malshagu and Zagyuri as its neighboring communities.

Gumo is a community in Kumbungu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a less populated community with a nucleated settlement pattern. Gumo is located along the Tamale-Kumbungu trunk road. Inhabitants of the community are predominantly farmers. The women in the community are known for shea butter production.

Choggu Mmanaayili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is located along the Tamale-Kumbungu trunk road. It is a populated community with nucleated settlement.

The municipality is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Sagnarigu as its capital city. However Tamale remains the capital city of the Northern Region.

Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Tolon-Kumbungu District in 1988, when it harbored the district capital which was then created from the former West Dagomba District Council, until the eastern part of the district was split off to create Kumbungu District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been renamed to become Tolon District. The district assembly is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Tolon as its capital town.

West Dagomba District is a former district council that was located in Northern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1975. However on 1988, it was split off into three new district assemblies: Tamale Municipal District, Savelugu-Nanton District and Tolon-Kumbungu District. The district assembly was located in the western part of Northern Region and had Tamale as its capital town.
