The Angelo State University Management Instruction and Research center was founded in 1975. It is an Agriculture Research Center that concentrates primarily on areas of research involving sheep, goat, and cattle production; range management and improvement and wildlife management. The center resides on over 6,000 acres (24 km2) of land under long-term lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is located on the shores of O.C. Fisher Lake outside San Angelo, Texas. The research center serves as a full-size working ranch, one of few among U.S. Universities. It includes 150 Rambouillet sheep, 100 Suffolk and hair sheep, 95 Boer goats, 50 Angora goats, and over 100 Angus cows. Departments within the MIR include the $1.6 million, 8,000 square feet (743 m2) Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory facility opened in 2005 and the associated ASU Meat Market.
The Morris Wetland Management District includes 244 waterfowl production areas, encompassing over 50,000 acres (200 km2) scattered throughout an eight-county area. Like other wetland management districts in the prairie states, the goal of the Morris District is to restore and protect sufficient wetland and grassland habitat to meet the needs of prairie wildlife, particularly breeding waterfowl, as well as provide places for public recreation.
The East Central Texas forests (33) is a small temperate broadleaf and mixed forests ecoregion almost entirely within the state of Texas, United States. The northern forests perimeter is partially within the southeast Oklahoma border.
Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center is a 2,800-acre outdoor education and recreation facility in northeast Harris County managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The site is located along Sheldon Lake reservoir. The federal government constructed the reservoir on Carpenter's Bayou in 1942 in order to support growing war-related industries along the Houston Ship Channel. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department acquired the reservoir in 1952, opening it in 1955 as the Sheldon Wildlife Management Area. The site was designated a state park in 1984.
