Gustavo Ramos (born 1993) is a Brazilian-American fine artist and oil painter. He initially gained recognition for painting a series of realistic portraits that went on to receive national and international awards. In 2020, he was a featured artist at the Springville Museum of Art, where one of his paintings was acquired for the museum's permanent collection. [1] In 2022, he was selected as a winner of Royal Talens' The Year of Rembrandt Award, when his work was displayed in the Rijksmuseum. [2]
Gustavo Ramos was born in 1993 [3] in the country of Brazil. At the age of 15, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. [4] Not being fluent in the English language, he turned his attention to facial expressions and bodily gestures which precipitated his interest in portrait drawing and painting. [5] He went on to study oil painting at Southern Virginia University where he earned his bachelor's degree in 2017. [4] In that same year, he was the recipient of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Foundation Fine Art Award. [6] He later attended the Florence Academy of Art. [4]
While Ramos was still in college, he created several self-portrait drawings as he studied the techniques of the old masters. [7] In 2020, one of his self-portraits from this period was featured on the cover of The Artist's Magazine's "The Best of Drawing," [8] earning him nationwide recognition.
After finishing his studies in 2018, Ramos created a series of realistic portrait paintings with a focus on psychological narratives that would go on to be featured in publications like The Artist's Magazine, [5] Fine Art Connoisseur, [3] BuzzFeed [9] and Southwest Art which included him in "21 Under 31: Young Artists to Buy Now". [10] In 2019, Ramos was accepted into the Art Renewal Center 13th Annual Salon, with his selected painting receiving a Staff Award [11] and travelling to Sotheby's and the European Museum of Modern Art. [12] In 2021, Ramos earned his place as a finalist in the Boynes Emerging Artist Award. [13]
In 2022, Ramos was selected by Royal Talens as the artist to represent North America in The Year of Rembrandt, [2] where he was awarded a trip to the Netherlands and the opportunity to display his work at the Rijksmuseum alongside the 6 other winning artists. [2]
In 2024, Ramos was included into the Lunar Codex, [14] a time capsule launched to the Moon named the most expansive, international, and diverse collection of contemporary culture launched into space. [15] His selected painting "Winter" was published in Veja Magazine, [16] Brazil's most influential outlet of printed media, as part of an article covering the Lunar Codex. [17]
Ramos has most recently stepped into educational roles, including teaching workshops at the Scottsdale Artists School, [18] Art Fest Mesa, [19] being a guest lecturer for Artists Magazine, [20] and releasing an online drawing course with Domestika. [21]

Jan Lievens was a Dutch Golden Age painter who was associated with his close contemporary Rembrandt, a year older, in the early parts of their careers. They shared a birthplace in Leiden, training with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, where they shared a studio for about five years until 1631. Like Rembrandt he painted both portraits and history paintings, but unlike him Lievens' career took him away from Amsterdam to London, Antwerp, The Hague and Berlin.

Self Portrait is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt. Painted in 1652, it is one of more than 40 painted self-portraits by Rembrandt, and was the first he had painted since 1645. In composition it is different from his previous self-portraits, depicting the painter in a direct frontal pose, hands on his hips, and with an air of self-confidence. It was painted the year that his financial difficulties began, and breaks with the sumptuous finery he had worn in previous self-portraits. Art historian Christopher White has called it "one of the most magisterial and sombre of these (late) pictures". It is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

In his late career in the 1650s, the Dutch artist Rembrandt created drawings that were inspired by miniatures from Mughal India. This was the only time the artist engaged with the artistic style of a "dramatically foreign culture". They depict Mughal emperors, noblemen, courtiers, and sometimes women and common folk. They were executed on expensive Asian or Japanese paper, and only 23 drawings survive today.
The Standard Bearer is a three-quarter-length self-portrait by Rembrandt formerly in the Paris collection of Elie de Rothschild, and purchased by the Rijksmuseum for 175 million euros with assistance from the Dutch state and Vereniging Rembrandt in 2021. It was painted on the occasion of the artist's move from Leiden to Amsterdam and is seen as an important early work that "shows Rembrandt's ambition to paint a group portrait for the Amsterdam militia, at the time the most valued commission a painter could be awarded."
