History and profile

Southwest Art was first published in May 1971. [1] [ better source needed ][ dubious ] Initially, the magazine was based in Houston, Texas. It first dealt with arts in Houston and then its coverage expanded to the broader southwestern United States. [1] [ dubious ] The magazine mainly features paintings and textiles, but also digital and other modern creative endeavors. It mostly covers articles about the artists, galleries, and collectors. James Havard was an American painter and sculptor. He was a pioneer of abstract illusionism in the 1970s. In the 1980s he changed his style into a form of abstract expressionism influenced by Native American and tribal cultures as well as outsider art. Dorothy Hood was an American painter in the Modernist tradition. Her work is held in private collections and at several museums, most notably the Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her preferred mediums were oil paint and ink.

Richard Wray was an American abstract expressionist painter whose work had an influence on the art scene in Houston, Texas. After an art career spanning over 50 years, he died at age 77 of liver disease. An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. The long gallery in Elizabethan and Jacobean houses served many purposes including the display of art. Historically, art is displayed as evidence of status and wealth, and for religious art as objects of ritual or the depiction of narratives. The first galleries were in the palaces of the aristocracy, or in churches. As art collections grew, buildings became dedicated to art, becoming the first art museums.

Andy Burgess is a British artist based in Tucson, Arizona. He is best known for his abstract depiction of modernist architecture, in particular for mid-century modern homes. Likened to David Hockney, Burgess describes his style as "Pop Geometry". Burgess has exhibited at the Tucson Museum of Art and the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and his represented by at the Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London, Tandem Press in Wisconsin, the Bonner David Galleries in Scottsdale, and the Etherton Gallery in Tucson. Burgess’ known collectors include Kazuo Ishiguro and Emma Thompson.
