Duncan Zgambo (born November 4, 1990), professionally known as Gwamba, is a Malawi-born Rapper and Philanthropist. [1]

Early life

Gwamba is the youngest of four siblings. He spent most of his childhood in area 18, Lilongwe. In 2005 he and 3 friends formed a rap grouped called the Pittie Boys, before he started his solo career in 2009.

Music career

Gwamba's rap career was inspired by US rapper 50 Cent and local musician The Basement. He released a single with the Pittie Boiz called "Work That Thing" , which got airplay on FM 101 radio's Gowelo Beatz in 2008. Gwamba started recording as a solo artist 2009 and has made singles such as "Mmesa", "Tikakumane Kumadzi", "Sindingasiye Bawa", "Carina ya Mdala". In 2013 Gwamba released 3 singles: "Ndi Ofewa featuring EMM Q, Bola Kusache featuring Nesnes and Ndiyima Pachulu Featuring Bucci". Ndiyima pachulu Music video was released in February 2014. A songwriter, Gwamba's lyrics are inspired by real life and being around good people. He has worked with local hip-hop acts such as BarryOne, Young Kay, Phyzix and dancehall star Blak jak. Gwamba now a Gospel artist has released a number of singles such as "Better" and "Alleluyah" both featuring Emm Q and "Nzeru" featuring Maskal. In 2015 he won the award for Artist of The Year at the Urban Music People (UMP Awards), he also won 3 awards at the 2017 UMP awards, [2] [3] 1 award at the 2017 Nyasa music awards, 1 Award at the 2018 UMP Awards. In 2016, he released his debut album titled Jesus Is My Boss. Gwamba has since released The true independence.[ citation needed ]

In 2022, he was featured in a song "Mundikumbuse" by Ritta, award winning malawian female afro singer.

Philanthropy

In 2019: Gwamba became the CEO for Shepherd Bushiri Foundation, [8] a humanitarian organization that was founded by Dr Shepherd Bushiri. Apart from being the CEO for SBF, he has his own charity programs, notable ones including the 2016 1 Million Kwacha Jesus is My Boss Football and Netball Trophy in area 18, [9] 2017 2 Million Kwacha Football and Netball Trophy in area 18, 2017 1 Million Kwacha football and Netball trophy in Ntcheu, a donation of 500,000 Kwacha at Pashello charitable trust in Chikwawa in 2016, a donation of 2 million Kwacha to Pashello charitable trust in 2018, a donation of 3 Million Kwacha of Pashello charitable trust in 2019. Mwai Kumwenda(Note 1) is a Malawian netball international player. She represented Malawi at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. Kumwenda was the top goal scorer at three successive major tournaments – the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the 2015 Netball World Cup she was also named player of the tournament. Kumwenda captained Malawi and was again tournament top scorer when they finished third at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. At club level Kumwenda has played for Peninsula Waves in the Victorian Netball League, Victorian Fury in the Australian Netball League, Mainland Tactix in the ANZ Championship and for Melbourne Vixens in Suncorp Super Netball.

Shepherd Bushiri also known as Major 1 is a Malawian preacher, prophet, businessman, motivational speaker, and author.

Loreen Ngwira also spelt as Laureen Ngwira is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi in the positions of GD and GK.

Takondwa Lwazi also spelt as Takwonda Lwazi is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi internationally and for Malawian local club Blue Eagles in the positions of C and WA. She is known as one of the finest netball centre players to have played for Malawi despite being only 160cm tall in height. She also serves as a Police Sergeant in the Malawi Police Service.

ZaniMichelle Chiumia is a Malawian artist, actress, model and former TV presenter. She gained international recognition in music when she collaborated with a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter, Patoranking, on a song called "Single Tonight" released in 2016.

Juma James Chitsonga, better known by his stage name Jay Jay Cee, is a Malawian afro pop artist. He grew up listening to songs by Annie Matumbi, Danny from Zambia and Movado. He started implementing music at the age of 12 in 2009. He has worked with various artists such as Nesnes, Blaze, Sir Patricks and Hilco.

Kelvin Khuzumba popularly known as Nesnes is a Malawian rnb artist and song writer. He became popular after releasing songs such as Chidodo and It’s not fair in early 2010s. He featured Conel Chyoon and Lap T in the album which has songs like Chibwelele, Kadya Ubwelele, Sionse, Ndinjoye and Mundilanditse.

Dan Lufani, best known as Dan Lu, and sometimes written as Dan Lufan, is a Malawian Afro-pop singer and songwriter. In 2011, he was awarded as best Afro pop artist of the year in Malawi Music Awards. In 2016, he was nominated in best R&B/Afro-pop Act along with other artists such as Theo Thomson and Kell Kay.

Aubrey Ghambi, best known as Suffix, is a Malawian gospel rapper and songwriter. In 2020, he won a UMP Award in best gospel act. In 2018, his album titled "Before I Sleep" won the category Album of the Year in UMP Awards and he was nominated as Best Hip Hop Artist as well as Best Urban Gospel. In 2016, was nominated for the same category and award.

Fredo Penjani Kamlepo Kalua, best known as Fredokiss, is a Malawian rapper and songwriter. In 2020, he was nominated in UMP Award in Best Hip Hop Act and his music video "Dadada" won Music Video of the Year. In 2017, he won three categories namely, Artist of the Year, Best rapper and Best Live Act.

Chiku Malinga Chitsundi Banda, best known as Malinga Mafia, is a Malawian dancehall artist and songwriter. In 2018, he won a Nyasa Music Award as Best Dancehall artist of the year. His collaboration with Hyphen titled Tsidya lina won the Best collaboration of the year 2018. In 2017, he won the Best Music Video in Nyasa Music Awards. In 2016, he was awarded a UMP Award for Album of the Year as well as Best Reggae/Dancehall Act in years 2017 and 2018.

Angel Mbekeani, best known as Sangie, is a Malawian reggae artist and songwriter. In 2015, she won as the best female artist of the year in UMP Awards. In 2016 and 2019, she was nominated in the same awards in Best Female Artist of the Year. In 2017, she won in the same awards in Best Female Act.

Faith Ambudye Che Muphuwa Mussa is a Malawian Afro-soul singer, guitarist and songwriter. He won his first award in August 2004 in Chirunga Awards as the best male singer. In 2018, he won two UMP Awards in Best Live Act as well as Best Afro-soul Artist/Group. In 2016, was nominated for the same category and award. In 2013, he won a National award for his best single titled "Desperate". In 2017, his song titled "Mdidi" won the Best Single in Nyasa Music Awards. In 2018, he won another award again in Best Live Act.

Shukuran Mwachumu better known by his stage name Janta, is a Malawian Afro Pop artist. In 2015, his song titled Wangongole won a Nyasa Music Award in Best Song of the Year category. In 2019, his music video won Best video of the year in UMP Awards.

Noel Chikoleka better known by his stage name Phyzix, is a Malawian musician, rapper, songwriter and activist. He gained national recognition in 2006 when he released the song titled "Cholapitsa" (boogeyman) which sold over 40, 000 copies national wide within a month and has released over 6 albums. In 2020, he won a UMP Award in Best Hip Hop artist of the year.

Evans Zangazanga popularly known as Piksy is a Malawian musician. In 2015, he was nominated for the Best Male Southern Africa category in Kora Awards. He was the Brand Ambassador for Airtel for over 2 years commencing on 1 August 2012 and through 30 November 2015.

Chifuniro Steven Magalasi, best professionally known as Eli Njuchi, is a Malawian singer and songwriter. In 2018, he won a UMP Award in Best New Act. In 2019, he won another UMP award as the best male of the year.
