A non-governmental organization (NGO) is an organization that generally is formed independent from government. They are typically nonprofit entities, and many of them are active in humanitarianism or the social sciences; they can also include clubs and associations that provide services to their members and others. Surveys indicate that NGOs have a high degree of public trust, which can make them a useful proxy for the concerns of society and stakeholders. However, NGOs can also be lobby groups for corporations, such as the World Economic Forum.

In 2014, he was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Malala Yousafzai, "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education." During the 2000s, Parivartan used Right to Information (RTI) to address citizens' grievances related to Public Distribution System (PDS), public works, social welfare schemes, income tax and electricity. Madhopatti is a rural village based in Sirkoni Block of Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh. It comes in the 192 villages of Sirkoni Block of Jaunpur district. It is said that village is making a significant contribution to the country. The hamlet has given India 47 IAS officers. There has been no looking back for the village since. A number of people have chosen for a career in civil services; some youngsters from the village have also found successful careers with the Indian Space Research Organisation, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the World Bank. Not just this, the village has broken a record after four siblings cracked the exam and got selected for the IAS. One of them also served as the Chief Secretary of Bihar.
Saleem Farook was an Indian tribal rights activist and social worker from Karnataka. In 1989 he started the Thuamul Rampur tribal movement in Kalahandi which fought against the issue of land alienation of the tribals in that region. On 9 June 1989 he established the Antodaya society and organisation for the protection of tribal rights and promotion of tribal welfare in the tribal populated regions of southern Odisha. The Saleem Farook Janasikhya Pathagar at Mohangiri, Kalahandi is named after him.
Shruti Nagvanshi is a women's and child's rights activist and an advocate for marginalized groups in India, including the untouchable caste known as Dalit and rural women. She is one of the founding members of People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) and a founder of Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Panchayat, a women’s forum. She has worked with several other projects to empower minorities.
Humans For Humanity (HFH) is a non-governmental organization, founded by renowned social worker Anurag Chauhan, headquartered in Dehradun, India. It is working to bring awareness about menstrual health, hygiene among women across India. It is providing health, hygiene and comfort to women, especially in poverty-stricken and rural areas in India. The organization empowers women by educating women and young girls on menstruation and menstrual hygiene, and by conducting workshops to produce low-cost sanitary pads. The WASH project started by Humans For Humanity has reached over 3 million women in over 6 states in India in the last 6 years, as of October 2020.
Marachi Subburaman is a social worker who is rendering services related to eco-friendly sanitation and water conservation for rural areas in India through a Non-governmental organization viz Society for Community Organisation and People’s Education (SCOPE) based in Trichy, Tamil Nadu founded and run by him. His contribution to the field of sanitation was recognized nationally and towards the social service he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in 2021.
