These are the results of the women's balance beam competition, one of six events for female competitors of the artistic gymnastics discipline contested in the gymnastics at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The qualification and final rounds took place on August 15 and August 23 at the Olympic Indoor Hall.
Eighty-five gymnasts competed in the balance beam event in the artistic gymnastics qualification round on August 15. The eight highest scoring gymnasts advanced to the final on August 23.

Sandra Raluca Izbașa is a retired artistic gymnast from Romania. She is a double Olympic champion, having won the floor event at the 2008 Olympics and vault at the 2012 Olympics. She is also a winner of two Olympic bronze medals and multiple World Championship and European Championship medals.
Rebecca "Becky" Downie is a British artistic gymnast who competed at the 2008 and 2016 Summer Olympics. She is a double European champion and 2014 Commonwealth Games champion on the uneven bars as well as the 2019 World silver medallist.
Lauren Mitchell is a retired Australian artistic gymnast. She is the 2010 World Champion on floor and the 2009 World Championships silver medalist on balance beam and floor. Mitchell is only the second Australian female gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships, and she is the first to win a gold medal. She is the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion in the all-around, uneven bars, balance beam, and with the Australian team. She also represented Australia at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
Ksenia Dmitrievna Afanasyeva is a retired Russian artistic gymnast who competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She is the 2011 world champion on floor exercise, the 2013 and 2015 European floor champion, and the 2013 Universiade vault and floor champion. Widely regarded as one of the most original and artistic gymnasts of all time, she retired from elite gymnastics in July 2016 due to kidney disease, a month away from the 2016 Summer Olympics, for which she was the Russian team's first alternate.
Aliya Farkhatovna Mustafina is a retired Russian artistic gymnast and current coach. She is the 2010 all-around world champion, the 2013 European all around champion, the 2012 and 2016 Olympic uneven bars champion, and a seven-time Olympic medalist.
Larisa Andreea Iordache is a Romanian artistic gymnast. She is the current leader of the Romanian women's artistic gymnastics team, and represented Romania at the 2012 and 2020 Olympic Games.

She is the 2020 Olympic vault champion, the 2021 World vault champion, the 2020 Olympic all-around silver medalist, and the 2021 Pan American all-around champion. She was a member of the teams that won gold at the 2021 Pan American Championships and silver at the 2018 Pan American Championships. Andrade is the first Brazilian female artistic gymnast to medal at an Olympic Games and the first Olympic all-around medalist who qualified as an individual. She is only the second Brazilian female to win a gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Natalia Alexeyevna Kononenko is a retired Ukrainian artistic gymnast who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She is a two-time European bronze medalist on the uneven bars.
Dariya Yaroslavivna Zgoba is a retired Ukrainian Artistic gymnast. She was the 2007 European Champion on the uneven bars, and she represented Ukraine at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Her best event was the uneven bars.

Sanne Wevers is a Dutch artistic gymnast. She has competed internationally as a senior since 2007, primarily as a balance beam and uneven bars specialist. Wevers is the 2016 Olympic and 2018 European champion on balance beam and was the first Dutch female gymnast to become an individual Olympic champion. She is also the 2015 World and 2021 European silver medalist on balance beam and the 2015 European bronze medalist on uneven bars.
Nina Derwael is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She is the 2020 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion, and a two-time European champion on the uneven bars. She is also the 2019 European Games champion on the balance beam as well as a two-time Belgian national all-around champion.
Ana Filipa da Silva Martins is a Portuguese artistic gymnast who competed at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. She won a bronze medal at the 2015 Summer Universiade on the balance beam. She is the first Portuguese gymnast to win a World Cup gold medal.

The women's balance beam event at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 25 July and 3 August 2021 at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre. Approximately 90 gymnasts from 53 nations are expected to compete on the balance beam in the qualifying round.
Women's artistic gymnastics qualification at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held at the Parque Polideportivo Roca from October 7–10. The results of the qualification determined the qualifiers to the finals: 18 gymnasts in the all-around final, and 8 gymnasts in each of 4 apparatus finals.
Ting Hua-tien is a Taiwanese artistic gymnast who represented her country at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships. Ting competed at the 2020 Olympic Games, making her the first Taiwanese female gymnast to qualify for an Olympic Games since 1968. She is the 2019 Asian Champion on the balance beam.
