Gymnastics at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games was divided into three sub-categories: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and aerobics. The 1979 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 10th Southeast Asian Games, was a subcontinental multi-sport event held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 21 to 30 September 1979. This was the first time that Indonesia hosted the games. Indonesia is the fifth nation to host the Southeast Asian Games after Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Singapore. The games was officially opened and closed by President Soeharto at the Senayan Sports Stadium. The final medal tally was led by host Indonesia, followed by Thailand and Burma.
The 1985 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 13th Southeast Asian Games, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held in Bangkok, Thailand from 8 to 17 December 1985.
The 1995 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Southeast Asian Games, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 9 to 17 December 1995. It was the first time that a non-capital city hosted the biennial sports event. Chiang Mai is the second Thai city to host the Southeast Asian Games after Bangkok. The games were opened and closed by Vajiralongkorn, the then-Crown Prince of Thailand. With the return of Cambodia, all ten members of the federation were present to compete in the SEA Games for the first time.

Thương is the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and 2007 Southeast Asian Games champion on the balance beam and 2007 bronze medalist on the floor exercise. Thương competed at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where she did not reach any event final.
This is a list of sports played in the biennial Southeast Asian Games. Unlike the Olympic games, there are no official limits to the number of sports which may be contested, and the range may be decided by the organising host pending approval by the Southeast Asian Games Federation. Albeit for some core sports which must be featured, the host is also free to introduce other sports. Over time, this has meant as much as 43 sports in the 24th edition of the games, and the programme has included relatively obscure sports such as arnis, finswimming and pétanque.

Roypim Ngampeerapong is a gymnast, member of the Aerobic Gymnastics National Thailand team. Coached by Desislava Bogusheva (BUL). She is known as the only Thai Gymnast in the history, awarded by the International Gymnastics Federation FIG as a "World Class Gymnast". Being a multiple World Cup medalist, she participated in five consecutive Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships during the period 2006 - 2014. Ngampeerapong won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games in 2007.

Carlos Edriel Yulo is a Filipino artistic gymnast who has won multiple medals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. He is the first Filipino and the first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships with his floor exercise bronze medal finish in 2018, and the first ever gold medal for the Philippines in 2019 on the same apparatus. This performance also qualified him to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) is the governing body of gymnastics in Asia. It is one of the five continental confederations making up the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). AGU was formed in October 1964 during the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (Japan), with Japan, South Korea, China and Philippines being the founder members. AGU has headquarters in Qatar and consists of 37 member federations.
