Gytis Masiulis (born 10 April 1998) is a Lithuanian professional basketball player for Rytas Vilnius of the LKL.

Professional career

Masiulis started his professional career when he signed with BC Žalgiris-2 in summer 2014. He debuted for the senior team of Žalgiris Kaunas on 22 January 2017 against Nevėžis Kėdainiai. [1] In June 2017, he participated in adidas Eurocamp in Treviso, and led Europe to an 82–62 victory over the United States, scoring 16 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. [2] In July 2018, Masiulis was loaned to Neptūnas Klaipėda. In the following year, he was named LKL Best Young Player as the top under-21 player in the league. [3]

On 28 May 2020, Masiulis was loaned to Fraport Skyliners of the Basketball Bundesliga. [4]

On July 7, 2021, he has signed with Bilbao Basket of the Liga ACB. [5]

On July 2, 2022, he signed with Rytas Vilnius of the LKL and the Basketball Champions League. [6]

National team career

Gytis Masiulis made his youth debut for Lithuania at the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship in Latvia. [7] He won a bronze medal with Lithuania in the 2015 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. [8] One year later, he won silver medal at the 2016 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in Turkey. [9] In 2017, Masiulis represented Lithuania at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup. [10]

Personal life

Gytis is the son of former Lithuanian national basketball team member Tomas Masiulis, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and previously had success with Žalgiris Kaunas and Prokom Trefl Sopot in the EuroLeague. [11]

The first LKL Finals series was held in 1994, and was contested by Žalgiris and Atletas, with Žalgiris winning the series 3–1.

During his coaching career, he was the head coach of Žalgiris-2. He is currently the assistant basketball coach for Turkish club Fenerbahçe Beko.

BC Prienai was a Lithuanian professional basketball club based in Prienai. They played domestically in the Lithuanian Basketball League every year since winning the promotion in 2009. During the 2008–09 season, then called Rūdupis, they became the champion of the NKL and won the challenge match for a slot in the LKL. In their debut LKL season Rūdupis took seventh place, while next two seasons brought BC Prienai two bronze LKL medals. BC Prienai played in EuroCup 2011–12 with moderate success; the team won 3 games out of 6, but nonetheless failed to qualify for the next stage. More recently, the team has become a strong competitor in domestic tournaments, more than once upsetting teams such as Žalgiris Kaunas and Lietuvos rytas Vilnius. Due to home court advantage, Žalgiris played Game 1, 3 and 5 at home. Žalgiris defeated Lietuvos rytas 4–1, earning the franchise its 20th LKL championship. Brandon Davies was named the Finals MVP.
