Merano was founded in 1968. They won the Serie A twice, in 1986 and 1999. Since 2004 the club is playing in the 2nd highest league in Italy.

Gaetano "Gates" Orlando is a Canadian-born Italian former ice hockey centre and coach. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Buffalo Sabres between 1984 and 1987. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1984 to 1999, was mainly spent in the Italian Serie A and Swiss Nationalliga A. Internationally Orlando played for the Italian national team at several World Championships and at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. He later coached in the minor leagues for a few years, and also worked as a scout for the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. His father's ancestry hails from Agnone, Isernia, Molise, Italy.

Tomáš "Vosa" Sršeň is a former Czechoslovakian professional ice hockey left wing who played two games in the National Hockey League for the Edmonton Oilers during the 1990–91 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1984 to 2011, was mainly spent in the Czech Republic. Internationally Sršeň played for the Czech national team at several international tournaments, including the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Frank Nigro is a Canadian-born Italian former professional ice hockey player who played 68 games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a youth, he played in the 1973 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Richmond Hill. In the latter stages of his playing career, he joined Merano and later HC Varese of Italy's Serie A hockey league. He also competed in the men's tournament at the 1992 Winter Olympics for Italy.

Rick Morocco is a Canadian-Italian ice hockey executive, and former professional player. A native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, he played junior ice hockey in Ontario, before winning a national university championship with the York Lions. During six seasons of professional hockey in Italy, he also played for the Italy men's national team at the World Championships and Winter Olympics. After his playing career, he served as an executive for Ontario University Athletics, the Professional Hockey Players' Association, the Canadian Junior Hockey League, and the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame in 2005.
