HDMS Thetis was a Fifth rate frigate of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy, which she served from 1790 to 1850. She is remembered as the ship that carried a young Bertel Thorvaldsen to Malta in 1796. The sculptor ended up living and working in Rome the next more than forty years. He created a large number of small portrait drawings of the officers on board the ship.
Thetis was built at Nyholm to a design by Ernst Wilhelm Stibolt She was laid down on 19 August 1789 and the construction was completed on 19 May 1792. She was launched on 7 August 1790. [4]
Thetis was 46.45 metres (152 ft 5 in) long, with a beam of 11.76 metres (38 ft 7 in) and a draught of 5.17 metres (17 ft 0 in).She displaced 658 1⁄2læster. Her complement was approximately 380 men. Her armament was 26 × 18-pounder guns, 14 6-pounder guns, 4 × 12-pounder howitzers and 6 × one-pounder falconettes. [5]
Thetis was sent on a diplomatic mission to the Mediterranean in 1796–97. She was under command of captain Lorentz Fisker and with Captain lieutenant Claus Hvidtfeldt Blom as second-in-command. Fisker had two missions: first, to escort the annual "gift ship" to Algiers, and second, to arrange for the freeing of two Danish vessels and their crews in Tripoli. The other officers were Gerhard Sievers Bille (first lieutenant), Laurits Jensen Grove (first lieutenant), Johannes Krieger (1773-1818, second lieutenant), Andreas Christian Lütken (second lieutenant), Johan Joachim Uldall (second lieutenant), Johan Christian Gustav Hohlenberg (second lieutenant), Peder Pavels (chaplin), Christian Georg Hansen (chief surgeon), Blankfordt (junior surgeon), G. Rørbye (Skibsproviantforvalter), Hassing (død 28.4.1797, Underproviantskriver), H. A. Schmidt (Skibssekretær), Hans Jørgen Tronsen )chief mate) and Gregorius (hovmester). [6]
The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen was granted permission to travel to Rome with the ship. He visited Fisker and his wife in their home on Toldbodvej several times prior to the ship's departure. He boarded the ship on 29 August 1796.
Thetis set sail from Copenhagen on 30 August, On 6–8 September, she fired some warning shots at some British naval ships in the North Sea. On 9 September, she anchored off Dover due to heavy fog. On 2 October, she exchanged some gun shots with a couple of Portuguese naval vessels off the coast of Portugal. On 8 October, Thetis anchored at the Roads of Malaga. Her departure from Malaga was delayed by lack of wind. Thorvaldsen and some of the officers spent the time touring the town, visiting some of its churches and coffee houses. Thetis departed from Malaga on 11 October, bound for Algiers. On 16 October, she left the tribute ship Laurentius behind in Algiers, continuing alone to Malta. [7]
At Valetta, on 24 October, Thetis was placed under a 40-day plague quarantine. On 3 November, Malta's health commission decided to maintain the 40-day quarantine plus an extra 20 days in case the ship decided to call at Tripoli in the meantime. [7]
On 7 November, Thetis continued to Tripoli. On 14 November, Fisker engaged in diplomatic, but unsuccessful, negotiations with the old Pasha of Tripoli, Yusuf Karamanli. A storm forecast forced Thetis to exit the Port of Tripoli, leaving behind her captain. On 23 November, she was finally able to return to Tripoli. [7]
Thetis left Tripoli again on 25 November, bound either for Sicily or Malta. On her arrival at Valetta, on 2 December, she was placed under plague quarantine until 18 December. On 17 January 1797, Thetis departed from Valetta. [7]
Thorvaldsen created a number of miniature portrait drawings of the officers on board the Thetisen route to the Mediterranean in 1796. [8]
Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen was a Danish-Icelandic sculptor and medalist of international fame, who spent most of his life (1797–1838) in Italy. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen into a working-class Danish/Icelandic family, and was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art at the age of eleven. Working part-time with his father, who was a wood carver, Thorvaldsen won many honors and medals at the academy. He was awarded a stipend to travel to Rome and continue his education.
USS President was a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, nominally rated at 44 guns; she was launched in April 1800 from a shipyard in New York City. President was one of the original six frigates whose construction the Naval Act of 1794 had authorized, and she was the last to be completed. The name "President" was among ten names submitted to President George Washington by Secretary of War Timothy Pickering in March of 1795 for the frigates that were to be constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed these frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so President and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. Forman Cheeseman, and later Christian Bergh were in charge of her construction. Her first duties with the newly formed United States Navy were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during the Quasi War with France and to engage in a punitive expedition against the Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War.
The Action of 16 May 1797 was a naval battle that took place near Tripoli in Ottoman Tripolitania. The Danish squadron was attacked by a Tripolitan squadron that outnumbered them in number of vessels.
HDMS Najaden was a frigate of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy, which she served from 1796 until the British captured her in 1807. While in Dano-Norwegian service she participated in an action at Tripoli, North Africa. She served the Royal Navy as the fifth rate HMS Nyaden from 1808 until 1812 when she was broken up. During her brief British service she participated in some small attacks in the Barents Sea during the Anglo-Russian War.
Admiral of the Fleet Sir William Hall Gage was Second Sea Lord in the British Navy. He took part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent and the Siege of French-held Malta during the French Revolutionary Wars. He also saw action at the attack on the French ship Romulus during the closing stages of the Napoleonic Wars.
HMS Naiad was a Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate that served in the Napoleonic Wars. She was built by Hall and Co. at Limehouse on the Thames, launched in 1797, and commissioned in 1798. She served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and her last actions occurred in 1824–5. She was paid off in 1826. She then served for many years in Latin America as a coal depot, first for the Royal Navy and then for the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. She was broken up in 1898, 101 years after her launching.
HMS Melampus was a Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate that served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. She captured numerous prizes before the British sold her to the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1815. With the Dutch, she participated in a major action at Algiers and, then, in a number of colonial punitive expeditions in the Dutch East Indies.
Carl Wilhelm Jessen was a Danish naval officer and Governor of St Thomas in the Danish West Indies.
Frederik Christian Kaas was a Danish naval officer and landowner. He served as the governor of the Royal Danish Naval Academy from 1770 to 1781.
Steen Andersen Bille (1751–1833) was a Danish naval officer and a member of the Bille family. He rose to the rank of admiral and became a Privy Counselor during the period of Denmark-Norway's policy of "armed neutrality" following the Gunboat War. He was instrumental in the rebuilding of the Danish Navy after 1814.
Lorentz Fisker (1753–1819) was a Danish naval officer who charted the waters of southern Norway and the Kattegat, and organised Norwegian defences against Britain and Sweden.
Quatre frères was either an American or Bermudian-built vessel. She was commissioned in 1796 at Bordeaux as a French privateer. The Royal Navy captured her in April 1797 and took her into service as HMS Transfer. The Royal Navy sold her at Malta in 1802 to Ottoman Tripolitania. The U.S. Navy captured her in 1804 and took her into service as USS Scourge. The U.S. Navy sold her in 1812.
Andreas Lous was a Danish naval officer responsible for early navigational charts of Danish Waters and the dredging of harbours, in addition to sea-time on various Danish warships. He was captain of the ship-of-the-line HDMS Printz Friderich when she ran aground in 1780 near Læsø and was a total loss.
HDMS Galathea was a three-masted corvette of the Royal Danish Navy, constructed at Gammelholm to designs by Andreas Shifter in 1831. She is above all remembered for being the ship that undertook the First Galathea Expedition, 1845–1847. On two occasions, first in 1833 and later in 1839, Galathea was also instrumental in picking some of Bertel Thorvaldsen's artworks up in Rome and bringing them back to Denmark.
Henrik Lorentz Fisker was a successful naval officer in the service of Denmark. He was the son of an attorney at the supreme court, and deputy mayor of Copenhagen. From the age of thirteen as a cadet in the Danish-Norwegian navy, he rose through the ranks to vice admiral in 1775 and full admiral in 1790. He died 20 June 1797 and was buried in the Holmens Kirkegård, the Danish naval cemetery, in Copenhagen.
Ernst Wilhelm Stibolt was a Danish naval officer and ship builder, who served in the French navy for four years. and became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.
Frederik Christian Kaas (1725–1803) was a naval officer and admiral in the service of the Danish-Norwegian Crown.
HDMS Rota was a frigate of the Royal Danish Navy. She is above all remembered for being the ship that, in 1838, picked up the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and many of his artworks in Livorno and brought them back to Denmark. Hans Dahlerup, her captain, and Alexander Wilde, then a junior lieutenant, have both described the voyage in their memoirs. In 1863, Rota was sold to H. Puggaard & Co. and converted into a civilian merchant ship. She wrecked off the coast of southern Norway in 1892, some ten years after being sold to Paul Larsen, Arendal.
HDMS Thetis was a frigate of the Royal Danish Navy, which she served from 1842 to 1864. She is best known for being one of the ships that picked up some of the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's artworks and other belongings in Rome, some forty years after another Danish naval vessel by the same name had transported him the other way. In the meantime he had achieved international fame for his Neoclassical sculptures. Thorvaldsen, who had been back in Rome since September 1841, after moving back to Copenhagen in 1838, was also supposed to return with the ship. He did however, miss its departure by one day. The Royal Danish Navy's first music corps played its first performance on board the Thetis in 1857.
