A Pocket PC is a class of personal digital assistant (PDA) that runs the Windows Mobile or Windows Embedded Compact operating system that has some of the abilities of modern desktop PCs. The name was introduced by Microsoft in 2000 as a rebranding of the Palm-size PC category. Some of these devices also had integrated phone and data capabilities, which were called Pocket PC Phone Edition. Windows "Smartphone" is another Windows CE based platform for non-touch flip phones or dumber phones.
The Motorola MPx200 smartphone was launched in December 2003 as a joint venture between Motorola and Microsoft. The mobile phone's Windows Mobile for Smartphone OS allows users to access email and the Internet, use MSN Messenger, and view documents in Microsoft Office formats much like other Windows smartphones such as the Samsung SGH-i600 or HTC Tanager. The MPx200, along with the Samsung SCH-i600, were the first Windows Mobile smartphone devices to have wide distribution in the United States. Previously, smartphone platform devices could only be purchased in the United States as part of development kits sold by Microsoft. The only U.S. carrier of the phone was AT&T Wireless; however, reports also suggest a somewhat limited number of devices with Cingular branding have appeared following the purchase of AT&T Wireless by Cingular.
The Dell Axim family of personal digital assistants was Dell's line of Windows Mobile-powered Pocket PC Devices. The first model, the Axim X5, was introduced in 2002, while the final model, the Axim X51, was discontinued on April 9, 2007.
The O2 Xda brand was a range of Windows Mobile PDA phones, marketed by O2, developed by O2 Asia and manufactured by multiple OEMs (mainly HTC, Quanta and Arima). The first model was released in June 2002. The last models came to market in 2008. The "X" represents convergence of voice and information/data within one product; the "DA" stands for "Digital Assistant", as in PDA. The name of XDA Developers is derived from it.
The Hitachi SH-G1000 was one of the first and largest smartphones. New units were available for purchase for about a year, beginning in August 2003. The G1000 featured a full QWERTY keyboard and a large 250x360x65546 TFT display. It was a single-band phone, carried by Sprint for use on their PCS 1xRTT data network, running the Pocket PC 2002 operating system and software and came with a USB cradle to sync with a computer. Sprint discontinued selling this phone with the popularity increase of Windows Mobile 2003, which the G1000 was not upgradable to. It featured, on top of all the features of Pocket PC 2002, an improved Today screen (similar to the Windows Mobile 5 Today screen, the Clearvue office viewer to view your Microsoft Office documents like they would appear on a desktop PC, and the Hitachi Data Backup application.
The Palm Treo 700w is a Windows Mobile-powered smartphone that was officially announced on September 26, 2005. As Palm's first Windows Mobile-powered Treo, the 700w offered an alternative for users who want or need to use Microsoft software. It was offered by Verizon Wireless, and other CDMA carriers. A newer version of this phone has been released, the Treo 700wx.
The Motorola Q is a Windows Mobile smartphone first announced in the Summer of 2005 as a thin device with similar styling to Motorola's immensely popular RAZR. Motorola in a partnership with Verizon Wireless released the Q on May 31, 2006. A version for Sprint was released early in January 2007 and one for Amp'd Mobile in April 2007.
The SPH-i700 is a Windows Mobile-powered smartphone manufactured by Samsung of Korea. It is a powerful and expandable second generation Pocket PC phone compared to others in its class. It includes a transflective display, a VGA camera, 300 MHz Processor and supports SDIO, making it a competent PDA. It includes a complete bundle of accessories, including: a case, stereo headset-mic, cradle and both a regular and extended battery. The wireless radio was reported to get strong signals, and offered good voice quality and fast data speeds on Verizon's Express Network. The unit runs the Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition OS, and in July 2004, Verizon started shipping units running Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition. Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition offers the same improvements found in regular Pocket PCs running this OS: improved Pocket Internet Explorer, always on networking, an improved networking connection manager and overall speed improvements. Samsung makes a similar model called the SGH-i700 which is identical to the SPH-i700 except for it works on the GSM/GPRS network.
The HTC Universal is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC PDA manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation. It was the first 3G/UMTS-enabled Pocket PC PDA with a telecommunications function, and also the first to come with Windows Mobile 5.0 pre-installed.
Motorola Krzr, known as the "Canary" before its release, is a series of clamshell/flip mobile phones by Motorola, and was one of the series in the 4LTR line. It consisted of the K1 (2006) followed by the K3 (2007). As a clamshell/flip phone, the Krzr is longer but narrower than the Motorola Razr V3.
The HTC Prophet is a combined Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and mobile telephone manufactured by HTC.
The Palm Treo 700wx is a smartphone offered by Sprint, Alltel and Verizon as an update to Palm's earlier release of the Verizon-only Treo 700w. It is Palm's second Windows Mobile Treo.
The HTC Blue Angel is a GSM Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition PDA-phone, manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation introduced in 2004. It has a CDMA EVDO variant called the HTC Harrier, which does not have Wi-Fi like the Blue Angel does. Both have the same housing. It is sold by many different vendors under the names of O2 XDA IIs, Orange SPV M2000, Dopod 700, Qtek 9090, T-Mobile MDA III, Siemens SX66, i-mate PDA2k, Vodafone VPx, Verizon XV6600 (Harrier), Sprint PPC-6601 (Harrier) among others, which all have similar hardware specifications.
The HTC Touch, also known as the HTC P3450 or its codename the HTC Elf or the HTC Vogue for the CDMA variant, is a Windows Mobile 6-powered Pocket PC designed and manufactured by HTC. Its main, unique feature is a user interface named TouchFLO that detects a sweeping motion and can distinguish between a finger and a stylus. TouchFLO incorporates stylus-free access to a music player, a photo album, a video player and a picture-based contact book. The global launch of the Touch was in Leicester Square, London, on 5 June 2007, and the phone was initially available in two colours: black and green. The carrier bound names for this phone include Verizon Wireless XV6900, T-Mobile MDA Touch, O2 XDA Nova, Okta Touch and Vodafone VPA Touch.
The HTC Titan is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Pocket PC PDA and phone manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation of Taiwan. It is the successor to the HTC Apache upon which it improves by adding more ROM, GPS, EVDO Rev. A, additional hard keys, a scroll-wheel, spring-loaded keyboard, and a higher resolution camera. The Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system includes Office Mobile along with HTML email through Microsoft Outlook Mobile. Windows Media Player is included, allowing the Titan to act as a digital audio and digital movie player.
The Palm Centro is a smartphone marketed by Palm, Inc. beginning its release on October 14, 2007 offering the functionality of the larger Treo 755p in a smaller size.
The HTC Touch Cruise, also known as the HTC P3650 or its codename the HTC Polaris 100, is a Windows Mobile 6-powered Pocket PC. It is designed and manufactured by HTC and was first released in January 2008. In January 2009, HTC announced a completely redesigned device, also called the HTC Touch Cruise. It was the first device to feature HTC Footprints.
The HTC Touch Pro is a smart phone from the Touch series of Internet-enabled Windows Mobile Pocket PC smartphones designed and marketed by HTC Corporation of Taiwan. It is an enhanced version of the HTC Touch Diamond with the addition of a left-side slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card slot, and a camera flash. The Touch Pro smartphone's functions include those of a camera phone and a portable media player in addition to text messaging and multimedia messaging. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, instant messaging, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity. Depending on its market, it is a quad-band GSM or quad-band UMTS phone with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, and HSUPA or a tri-band CDMA phone with 1xEV-DO Rev A. All versions feature TouchFLO 3D — a new enhanced version of the TouchFLO interface, unique only to the latest Touch series. In March 2009, HTC announced a new version, the Touch Pro2 which has a larger screen (3.6") and a redesigned slide out QWERTY keyboard with spaces between the keys.
The HTC Touch Pro2 is a slate smartphone, part of the Touch series of Internet-enabled, Windows Mobile, Pocket PC smartphones designed and marketed by HTC Corporation of Taiwan. It is an enhanced version of the HTC Touch Pro with a left-side slide-out QWERTY keyboard, with tilting screen. The Touch Pro2 smartphone's functions include those of a camera phone and a portable media player in addition to text messaging and multimedia messaging. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, instant messaging, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity. Visual voicemail is not a standard feature for the Touch Pro2, unlike its predecessor the Touch Pro. The Verizon Wireless version does include a visual voicemail application, however. All versions feature TouchFLO 3D — a new enhanced version of the TouchFLO interface, unique only to the latest Touch series. The latest update renamed TouchFLO 3D to SenseUI, to match HTC's Android offering.
