The HUB-Robeson Center is the student union building, centrally located on Penn State's main campus in University Park, Pennsylvania.
This building was originally constructed in 1953 and has undergone major renovations in 1973 and 1983. [1] Along with these renovations, a 91,000 square foot addition was added to the existing building in 1997. Most recently, in 2015, an additional 50,000 usable square feet was created as part of a facade construction project. [2] The original, 1953 iteration of the building was named the Hetzel Union Building, or HUB, after Penn State president Ralph D. Hetzel, who served as the 10th president of Penn State University from 1927 to 1947.[ citation needed ]
Prior to 1999, the Robeson Center resided in the Walnut Building on Penn State’s campus. The Robeson Center was originally referred to as Penn State’s Black Cultural Center, but was renamed after Paul Robeson in 1986 for his contributions to the civil rights movement in the 20th century. [3] In 1999, the Robeson Center moved from the Walnut building to the newly renovated HUB, which was then renamed the Hetzel Union Building-Robeson Center (HUB-Robeson Center).
As the HUB-Robeson Center is the campus’s student union, it provides a variety of services, retail spaces and dining options to students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Penn State University.
In 1996, a nearby resident named Jillian Robbins, opened fire on the lawn in front of the building. The 19-year-old shooter killed one student and injured another during her unprovoked attack. She was ultimately stopped after being tackled while trying to load her second clip into her Mauser rifle by aerospace engineering student Brendon Malovrh. [4]
Lincoln University (LU) is a public state-related historically black university (HBCU) near Oxford, Pennsylvania. Founded as the private Ashmun Institute in 1854, it has been a public institution since 1972 and is the second HBCU in the state, after Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Lincoln is also recognized as the first college-degree granting HBCU in the country. Its main campus is located on 422 acres near the town of Oxford in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The university has a second location in the University City area of Philadelphia. Lincoln University provides undergraduate and graduate coursework to approximately 2,000 students. It is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Old Main is The Pennsylvania State University's first building of major significance. First completed in 1867, the current incarnation of the building was completed in 1930. Today, Old Main serves as the administrative center of Penn State, housing the offices of the president and other officials. It is located in the Farmers' High School Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
University Park, also referred to as Penn State University Park, is the name given to the Pennsylvania State University's main campus located in both State College and College Township, Pennsylvania. The campus post office was designated "University Park, Pennsylvania" in 1953 by Penn State president Milton Eisenhower, after what was then Pennsylvania State College was upgraded to university status.
Missouri Southern State University is a public university in Joplin, Missouri. It was established in 1937 as Joplin Junior College. The university enrolled 4,346 students in Fall 2021.
Central State University (CSU) is a public, historically black land-grant university in Wilberforce, Ohio. It is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Coffman Memorial Union is a student union on the East Bank campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Situated near the Mississippi River, Coffman anchors the south end of Northrop Mall, a grassy area at the center of campus that is bordered by the University's physics, mathematics, chemistry, and administration buildings, plus Walter Library and Northrop Auditorium. Coffman sits at the south end of the mall, across Washington Avenue, and opposite Northrop.
Old Coaly was a mule who helped to build the original Old Main building on the campus of the Pennsylvania State University and gained fame as an early Penn State mascot.
The Pennsylvania State University was founded on February 22, 1855 by act P.L.46, No.50 of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania. Centre County became the home of the new school when James Irvin of Bellefonte donated 200 acres (809,000 m²) of land and sold the trustees 200 acres more. In 1861, Penn State graduated its first class, marking the first graduates of a baccalaureate program at an American agricultural college. On May 1, 1862, the school's name was changed to the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, and with the passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Act, Pennsylvania selected the school in 1863 to be the state's sole land grant college. In the following years, enrollment fell as the school tried to balance purely agricultural studies with a more classic education, falling to 64 undergraduates in 1875, a year after the school's name changed once again to the Pennsylvania State College.
Penn State Abington is a commonwealth campus of the Pennsylvania State University located in Abington, Pennsylvania. The campus is set on 45 acres (180,000 m2) of wooded land. The roughly 4000 undergraduate students are taught by a full-time staff of over 150 professors and teaching assistants.
Penn State Altoona is a commonwealth campus of The Pennsylvania State University located in Logan Township, Pennsylvania. It is one of four full-fledged four year institutions in the Commonwealth Campus network. The full-time student count was 2,577 in 2023.
The main campus of Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia; the central campus is roughly bordered by Prices Fork Road to the northwest, Plantation Road to the west, Main Street to the east, and U.S. Route 460 bypass to the south, although it also has several thousand acres beyond the central campus. The Virginia Tech campus consists of 130 buildings on approximately 2,600 acres (11 km2). It was the site of the Draper's Meadow massacre in 1755 during the French and Indian War.
State College Area High School, often referred to locally as "State High," is a public high school in State College, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the only public high school in the State College Area School District and is within walking distance of Penn State University. It is 5 minutes away from Mount Nittany Middle School, and 10 minutes away from Park Forest Middle School.
WKPS is a college radio station owned by Penn State University. The station runs on a full-time, multi-format schedule featuring a wide variety of programming. "The LION 90.7fm" transmits to a potential audience of over 125,000 from its studio in the Hetzel Union Building (HUB)-Robeson Center. The station also has a live webcast, which is capable of streaming live to hundreds of listeners. WKPS is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with the primary goal being to serve the campus and local community and secondary goals being the training, education and instruction of students in broadcast radio and station management. The station is run entirely by Penn State undergraduates, and maintains its tradition of public service by allowing student broadcasters from any academic major and community broadcasters local to the area. It also retains its programmatic independence by remaining unaffiliated with any academic college.
The University of Pittsburgh at Titusville is a state-related college in Titusville, Pennsylvania. It is a two-year campus of the University of Pittsburgh that provides associate degrees and pre-professional tracks with the potential to transfer students to other programs for baccalaureate degrees. In the fall of 2020, Pitt-Titusville converted its academic programs into the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville Education and Training Hub. This program incorporates three entities into UPT: Northern Pennsylvania Regional College (NPRC), the university's Swanson School of Engineering, and Manchester Bidwell Corporation.
Ralph Dorn Hetzel was the tenth President of the Pennsylvania State University, serving from 1927 until 1947. Prior to that he served as the President of the New Hampshire College, which became the University of New Hampshire in 1923, under Hetzel's tenure.
The University of Minnesota Old Campus Historic District is a historic district located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1984, it includes a number of historic buildings that were constructed during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and represents the oldest extant section of the University of Minnesota campus. The general area was designed by landscape architect Horace W. S. Cleveland, who envisioned a park-like University. His plan, that he presented to the Board of Regents, went on to help form the Historic District. It is located directly to the north of the University's Northrop Mall Historic District.
The J. Wayne Reitz Union is the student union of the University of Florida, located on Museum Road on the university campus in Gainesville, Florida, United States. The union was named in honor of J. Wayne Reitz, the fifth president of the university, who served from 1955 to 1967. The building, which was originally completed in 1967, contains dining facilities, meeting rooms, offices, a computer lab, a game room, an outdoor amphitheater, retail stores, a movie theater and a hotel.
The Hub is a historic building on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida in the United States. It is located on Stadium Road between Buckman Drive and Fletcher Drive.
College Houses are a major part of facilitating a community and experience amongst the undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania. Each house has one Faculty Director and one House Director, with at least two College House Fellows in residence. Many houses host a range of jobs for students, including Residential Advisors, House Councils, Managers and Information Technology assistants. The houses also encourage communities through the wide range of Program Communities within the system.
