Halwes was a Tasmanian pacer foaled in 1959 and is notable for his win in the 1968 Miracle Mile Pace, an Australian record time trial, and his dramatic late scratching at the 1968 Inter Dominion.

Early career

Halwes commenced racing at Carrick, Tasmania in November 1963 where he won by 30 yards after being backed from 5/1 to 1/2. He won three races and had a dead-heat for first before finishing second in the Novice Championship, his first defeat. He then won 8 consecutive races before finishing second to Stormy Bruce in the Tasmanian Pacing Championship. His first races on the mainland were at the Melbourne Showgrounds where he won twice in January 1965 and three times in April 1965 without defeat. He did not race again until October 1966 following the disqualification of his trainer Aub Wesley. [1]

1966-67 season

Halwes began the 1966/67 season with a series of wins in his native Tasmania and on 31 December 1966 he won the Tasmanian Pacing Championship from a 48 yard handicap over Victorian horse Future Intangible. Returning to Victoria he was first past the post in the New Year FFA at the Melbourne Showgrounds but lost the race on protest to Robin Dundee. [2] An injury then prevented him from starting in the A G Hunter Cup. A trip to Perth for the Inter Dominion followed where he was second to Binshaw on the first two nights of the carnival, both times as favourite and both times from a 24 yard handicap. Halwes then suffered quarter cracks in a hoof which prevented him from racing again in the series. [1]

1967-68 season

In October 1967 Halwes raced in Sydney for the first time where he was beaten twice before winning the Spring Cup over Voice Derby then beating First Lee after giving him a 24 yard start at the handicaps. After a short break he won two more races at Harold Park before being beaten by nine yards by Raiarmagh Pool in the Summer Cup. [1] The 1968 Inter Dominion was contested at Alexandra Park, Auckland. On the first night of the championships Halwes won by four lengths in track record time, a mile rate of 2.05 2/5 for 13 furlongs. On night two Halwes won rating 2.04 1/5 for 11 furlongs, his second track record in as many starts in Auckland. His winning margin was two lengths. Halwes then defeated another Australian pacer First Lee over two miles on the third night. On the night of the Inter Dominion final Halwes was found to have a painful abscess in a quarter crack in his off foreleg and was scratched from the final won by First Lee. Veterinary advice was that he would recover within 48 hours. [3]

Halwes returned to Australia for the second running of the Miracle Mile Pace at Harold Park. He dominated betting starting favourite at 4/9. Halwes took control of the event mid-race from New Zealand pacer Great Adios and won by 20 yards from First Lee with a further 10 yards to Great Adios. His time for the mile was 1.58.6 which broke the track record of Robin Dundee set the previous year and the Australian mile record held by Ribands. It was also the first mile under two minutes by an Australian bred anywhere in the world [1]

Halwes then won the Easter Cup at Harold Park from a 36 yard handicap. At Harold Park he also won an 11 ½ furlongs race in a track record mile rate of 2.02 1/5 and ran a 13 furlongs 98 yards furlong track record of 2.04 1/5 from a standing start. In 1967/68 he started 17 times for 13 wins 1 second and 2 thirds. [4]

1968-69 season

Halwes began the 1968 season winning in Tasmania before returning to Sydney. In the Spring Cup Halwes was faced with a handicap of 48 yards and finished third behind Oligarch before beating Oligarch a week later. [1] In a time trial on 22 November Halwes recorded a mile in 1.57.3 breaking the Australian mile record by more than one second. [5] Halwes then suffered a minor injury and was retired following two unplaced performances at Harold Park in January 1969. In his last four years of racing his only defeated twice from level marks.[ citation needed ]

Halwes died of a heart attack, aged 28, on 15 September 1987, at the Hagley property of his owner and trainer, Aub Wesley. [6]

Harness racing in Australia

Harness racing, also colloquially known as trotting or the trots, is a spectator sport in Australia, with significant amounts of money wagered annually with bookmakers and the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB). In Australia there are 90 harness racing tracks, which hold over 1,900 meetings annually. There are approximately 2,900 drivers and 4,000 trainers with about 5,000 Standardbred horses foaled and registered each year.

The New Zealand Cup for standardbred horses, also known as either the New Zealand Trotting Cup or the New Zealand Pacing Cup is a Group One (G1) harness race held annually by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club at Addington Raceway in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Miracle Mile is an Australian harness racing event for Standardbred pacers that was held at Harold Park Racetrack each November until 2008 when the race was switched to Menangle Park Paceway. Prize money has long been among that of Australia's leading harness races and has often included bonuses for speed.

Popular Alm (1976-2000) was an Australian bred Standardbred pacer. He was one of the fastest pacers Australia has produced, running exceptional times over many distances. Popular Alm set a world record for a mile time trial at Moonee Valley on 13 May 1983, running 1:53.2. He raced 62 times over seven seasons for 49 wins, seven seconds and three thirds for stake earnings of $710,883. He was known as "Poppy".

Hondo Grattan Australian Standardbred racehorse

Hondo Grattan was a Standardbred pacer from Bathurst, New South Wales known as the "Bathurst Bulldog". He won the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship in both 1973 and 1974, becoming the first horse to successfully defend an Inter Dominion title. Hondo Grattan was the first horse in Australia to win (AUD)$200,000 and also the first horse to win 21 races at Harold Park Paceway. He was a winner at a time of top competition, that included horses such as Pure Steel and Paleface Adios. He was inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame.

Harold Park Paceway was a harness racing track in Forest Lodge, New South Wales, in use from 1890 to 2010. It was a half-mile track but was just 739 metres in circumference until some changes in its later years. Races at the track were run over distances of 1,760m, 2,160m, 2,565m and occasionally 2,965m. Before its configuration, events were run over one mile, 9 furlongs and 170 yards, 11 and three quarter furlongs, 13 furlongs and 98 yards and 15 furlongs and 92 yards - these distances were all for standing starts. For mobile racing, the distances were one mile, 9 and a half furlongs and 11 and a half furlongs.

Blacks A Fake is a brown Standardbred gelding that won the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 Inter Dominion Championships, making him the only four-time winner of Australasia's premier harness race. He finished second, beaten by a long neck, in the 2009 Inter Dominion to Mr Feelgood (USA). His other achievements include wins in the Victoria Cup and Hunter Cup and three Australian Horse of the Year titles. He is Australasia's highest earning Standardbred, and was the world's highest earning pacer. He also was inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame.

Flashing Red is a brown Australia bred Standardbred racehorse that was foaled in 1997. He is notable in that he won both the Auckland Pacing Cup and two New Zealand Trotting Cups. These races are the richest harness races in New Zealand. He was victorious in every harness racing state of Australia and New Zealand and earned over $2,000,000 during his racing career.

The New Zealand Pacing Free For All is a major New Zealand harness race. It is notable as it is a Group One championship sprint race and has been won by nearly every champion pacer in New Zealand.

Highland Fling (horse) New Zealand Standardbred racehorse

Highland Fling was a New Zealand bred Standardbred racehorse. He is notable in that he won two New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness race, and sometimes the richest horse race in New Zealand. Highland Fling was a leading performer in the years 1947 and 1948. He won the 1948 New Zealand Trotting Cup with a handicap of 60 yards.

Chokin New Zealand Standardbred racehorse

Chokin is a New Zealand Standardbred racehorse who was notable in winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup, which is New Zealand's most prestigious horse race. Chokin is also one of the few horses to have won Harold Park Paceway's prestigious Miracle Mile Pace twice.
