The Hampshire Tennis Championships [1] or the Hampshire Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis event established in 1878 as the Bournemouth CLTC Tournament. In 1906 the Bournemouth tournament was upgraded to a county level event and renamed as Hampshire County Lawn Tennis Championships that ran continuously until 1981.
On May 21, 1878 the Bournemouth Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club staged its first tennis spring meeting the Bournemouth CLTC Tournament held at the cricket ground Dean Park, Bournemouth, Dorset, England that concluded on May 24, 1878. [2] In October 1878 a second autumn meeting was also held at the same venue.
In 1891 the Bournemouth LTC Tournament became known as the Bournemouth Open Tournament. [3] In 1906 the Bournemouth Open Tournament as it was called, was upgraded to a county level event and renamed as the Hampshire Lawn Tennis Championships, [4] that ran continuously until 1981 when it ceased to be part of the international tennis tour.
This tournament is still being staged today as a merged event called the Hampshire & IOW County Championships. [5]

Tennis Wales (Welsh: Tennis Cymru) is the national governing body for tennis in Wales. It is part of the British tennis governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association. It was founded as the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association (WLTA) in 1887.
The 1878 men's tennis season was composed of the third annual pre-open era tour. It now incorporated 15 tournaments staged in Great Britain and Ireland the Wimbledon championships was won by challenger Patrick Francis Hadow defeating the defending champion Spencer Gore.
The 1879 men's tennis season was composed of the fourth annual pre-open era tennis season and incorporated 26 tournaments. The 1879 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley defending champion Patrick Francis Hadow, defending champion could not participate in the Challenge Round. This year saw the inaugural Irish Championships that in its early stages of development was considered as important that of the Wimbledon Championships the event was won by Vere St. Leger Goold who defeated in Charles David Barry in the final by Charles David Barry 8–6, 8–6. Important this year was the staging of six hard court tournaments some of which included the Dublin University Championships the East Gloucestershire Championships held in Cheltenham Great Britain, Nice Tennis Tournament in Nice, France and the first tournament to be held outside of Europe in Australia with the Victorian Championships.
The 1881 men's tennis season was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 73 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.
The North of Ireland Championships was an early Victorian period men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1879. The championship was played at the Cliftonville Cricket Club, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland. The tournament ran annually for fifteen editions until 1894. It was the precursor tournament to the later Ulster Grass Court Championships.
The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. However the championships are still being staged today as the East of England and an LTA British Tour.
The Edgbaston Open Tournament was an early Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged in June 1881, at the Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club, Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England. This distinct tournament ran until 1908.
The Armagh Championship Tournament or Armagh ALTC Championship was a combined men's and women's Hard court tennis tournament staged first staged on 28 September 1878 as the Armagh Lawn Tennis Tournament at the Archery and Lawn Tennis Club, Armagh, Northern Ireland. The championship was staged up to at least 1934.
The Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or simply called the Leicestershire Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1900 that ran until 1914 as an open international tennis event. In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.
The Leicester Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1878 as the Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was held at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. It ran until 1939 as an open international tennis event.
The North Wales Championships were originally founded as the Vale of Clwyd CLTC Open Tournament in 1881. In 1883 that tournament became known as the North Wales Counties Challenge Cup until 1884 when it was renamed as the North Wales Challenge Cup until 1886. This first edition of the event lapsed, but was then revived by the Criccieth LTC at Criccieth in 1891 under its new name until 1939 when it was discontinued.
The Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Championships or simply known as the Yorkshire Championships was a combined men's and women's open grass court tennis tournament established in 1884 as the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Tournament then later Yorkshire Association and County Open Tournament and ran till 1970. It was first held in Ilkley, then, Harrogate, then Whitby before moving to permanently Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England.
Winifred Mary Arden Longhurst was a British tennis player. She was a four time quarter finalist in singles in the Wimbledon Championships in 1902, 1904, 1906 and 1912. She was active from 1892 until 1921 and won 29 career singles titles.
The Shropshire Championships or Shropshire Open Championship or Shropshire County Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first established in 1903 as the Championship of Shropshire. It was first held at the Severnside Lawn Tennis Club Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. The tournament was staged annually until 1959.
The Thirsk Amateur Tennis Championship was a British tennis competition founded in July 1882 as the Thirsk Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament organised by Thirsk Lawn Tennis Club at Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England and was played annually until 1908 when it was discontinued.

Maria Cecilia "Beatrice" Langrishe was an Irish tennis player during the late 19th century. She was a singles finalist at the Irish Championships in 1883. She was active from 1879 to 1890 and won 2 career singles titles.
