The Hanging Rock Ponds are a set of ponds near Hanging Rock, a village along the Ohio River in western Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. The ponds are the result of strip mining, or surface mining for iron ore or coal during the 1960s and 1970s. Hanging Rock Ponds have a total of 51 ponds, scattered throughout a 5,000 acre (20 km2) national reserve. This area is part of the Wayne National Forest, Ohio's only national forest. Fishing of these ponds is allowed and are regularly stocked with game fish ranging from catfish, bluegill, and bass.
This area has 24 miles (39 km) of trail used for off-road vehicles, hiking, and mountain biking.

It is part of the narrow, linear Metacomet Ridge that extends from Long Island Sound near New Haven, Connecticut, north through the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts to the Vermont border. The mountain, a popular hiking and rock climbing attraction located between metropolitan Hartford and Meriden, is known for expansive vistas, vertical cliff faces, mountain ridge reservoirs, unique microclimate ecosystems, and rare plant communities. Ragged Mountain is traversed by the 51-mile (82 km) Metacomet Trail.
Named for Shining Rock, the Shining Rock Wilderness is a protected Wilderness Area in Haywood County, North Carolina. Its first 13,400 acres (54 km2) have been part of the National Wilderness Preservation System since the System was created in 1964. It now includes 18,483 acres (74.80 km2), and is managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the Pisgah National Forest. It is separated from Middle Prong Wilderness to the southwest, by NC 215.
