Haniifa Mohamed Ibrahim (born 25 June 1991) is a Somalian Minister of Women and Human Rights Development.

Life

She was born in 1991 and she became a member of Somalia's parliament. [1]

In 2017 she was part of the 17 strong group of politicians drawn from Somalia's lower and upper houses of parliament whose task was to choose Somalia's president. [2] She became the Minister of Women and Human Rights Development under Prime Minister Abdihakin Ashkir in Somalia. [3]

In 2021 she opened a centre in Mogadishu to support women. This was in support of the target to get 30% women in politics. [3] In discussion with UN envoy James C. Swan she raised the issue of United Nations support for the 30% target in 2021. [4]

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known as Farmaajo, is a Somali politician who is the founder and chairman of the Tayo party. He was Prime Minister of Somalia for six months, from November 2010 until June 2011. He served a term as the 9th President of Somalia from 16 February 2017, and has been acting President since 8 February 2021. Since the expiration of his original term, the federal member states of Puntland and Jubaland no longer recognise Mohamed as the President of Somalia, but they eventually came to agreement on holding elections.

Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim controversy

The Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim controversy began in February 2013 when journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim interviewed Lul Ali Osman, who claimed that she was raped by government security forces while living in an internally displaced peoples camp in Mogadishu, Somalia. The two were arrested, tried, and sentenced to a year in prison for having allegedly fabricated the story. The trial was described by some human rights groups as politically motivated. Osman was later in the month acquitted following an appeal, and Ibrahim's sentence was reduced to six months. It was concurrently announced that an Independent Task Force on Human Rights had been established, which would review his case to see if due process has been followed. Ibrahim was released from detention the following month, on 17 March 2013.

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is the internationally recognised government of Somalia, and the first attempt to create a central government in Somalia since the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic. It replaced the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia on 20 August 2012 with the adoption of the Constitution of Somalia.

Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Somali economist and politician

Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, also known as Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Mohammad, is a Somali economist and politician. He previously worked in the Somali military government as a Livestock Marketing Specialist and later on in mainly leadership positions with a number of international organizations, including the World Bank, USAID, African Union/IBAR, the European Union, the Bank of Canada, COMESA, and the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah.

Duale Adan Mohamed is a Somali politician. He served as the Minister of Culture and Higher Education of Somalia under Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed. Duale Adan Mohamed succeeded Maryam Qaasim when her post as Minister for Human Development and Public Services ended on 17 January 2014. The Ministry was split to allow the creation of 6 cabinet positions one of which was the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education. The other 5 cabinet positions are Ministry of Health, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ministry of Women and Human Rights, Ministry of Education. On 12 January 2015, Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke announced his new cabinet which merged the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education with the Ministry of Education. Instead this meant that the new Minister of Education would take on some additional roles. Duale Adan Mohamed was instead appointed the Minister of Youth and Sports. However, he only served 2 weeks when on 17 January 2015, Prime Minister Sharmarke dissolved his newly nominated cabinet due to vehement opposition by legislators, who rejected the reappointment of certain former ministers. On 27 January 2015, Sharmarke appointed a new, smaller 20 minister cabinet of which Duale Adan Mohamed was replaced by Mohamed Omar Arte.

Abdirahman Omar Osman was a Somali politician who was the Governor of Banaadir and Mayor of Mogadishu. Mr Abdirahman Omar Osman aka Eng. Yarisow has been involved in Somali politics for the last 12 years of his life. He served the Government of Somalia as a senior advisor, Minister of Information twice, Minister of Treasury, spokesperson of the government, Senior Media & Strategic Communications Advisor and Senior Advisor & Spokesperson of the Office of the President.

Makka al-Mukarama hotel attack 2015 terrorist attack in Mogadishu, Somalia by the militant group al-Shabaab

On 27 March 2015, Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on the Makka al-Mukarama hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia. The siege ended a few hours later on 28 March, after a special forces unit of the Somali Armed Forces stormed the premises, recaptured it, and killed all five of the attackers. According to the Ministry of Information, around 20 people died during the standoff, including the perpetrators, security forces, hotel security guards and some civilians, with around 28 wounded. The special forces also rescued more than 50 hotel guests. President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ordered an investigation into the attack, and the Ministry of Information announced that the federal government was slated to pass new laws to curb illicit firearms. On 8 May, the Makka al-Mukarama hotel officially reopened after having undergone renovations.

2021 Somali presidential election Presidential elections in Somalia

Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Somalia after the parliamentary elections which conclude on 25th November. The current acting president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, has been in office since the February 2017 election and his term expired on 8 February 2021. In January 2019, former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed announced his candidacy for the election, citing the "inability of the current leadership to restore peace and security" against Al Shabaab militants who still control large rural regions of the country. Sharif formed a political party for the election, Himilo Qaran. As a group of 14 presidential candidates met in Mogadishu for a six day conference in November the Council of Presidential Candidates was formed and Sharif was nominated as chairman.

Despite the “vibrant media culture” in Somalia – which hosts more than 90 media outlets and scores of websites and blogs – numerous violations aimed at journalists and political leaders are documented, including killings, attacks, arbitrary arrests and detention, intimidation, harassment, closure of media outlets, confiscation of equipment and blocking of websites.

Zahra Mohamed Ahmad is a Somalian human rights activist and lawyer. She is the founder of the Somali Women Development Center. She was awarded the International Women of Courage Award in 2021.
