Happy Face Hill

Happy Face Hill is a landmark located in Simi Valley, California featuring a 150-foot-wide smiley face that overlooks the California State Route 118. [1] It was created in 1998 by gardener Sonny Klamerus, a resident of neighboring Northridge, Los Angeles, who originally trespassed on the property in order to gain access, and considered it a "practical joke." The Hill gained a favorable reception among the community and became a notable landmark within the years following. [2] It is currently maintained by the Simi Valley Sunrise Rotary Club and community volunteers. [3]

History

Klamerus claims to have made Happy Face Hill in 1998 as a prank and trespassed on land owned by a development company to create the work. The Hill was quickly embraced by the local community, and local residents volunteered in the succeeding years to assist with maintenance, brush clearance, and cosmetic adjustments. [4] Today, the Hill is owned by a private Homeowner association who grant access to the property for preservation purposes. [5] [6]

The Hill has undergone several notable changes, with the addition of solar-powered lights, an adjustment in the angle of the smile, and spotlights aimed at the hillside. In anticipation for the festival celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Little House on the Prairie, the hill was covered in thousands of blue and yellow flags. [7] [8]

The Hill is currently maintained by members of the Simi Valley Sunrise Rotary Club, [9] who also produce an annual Happy Face Music Festival in reference to the landmark. [10]

The Sayre Fire, also known as the Sylmar Fire, was a November 2008 wildfire that resulted in the loss of 489 residences in Los Angeles, California, United States, the "worst loss of homes due to fire" in the city's history. The fire was first reported at 10:29 p.m. PDT on November 14, 2008, in the Sylmar section of Los Angeles. As of November 20, 2008, the fire was 100% contained, had burned 11,262 acres (46 km2) and destroyed more than 600 structures. The number of homes lost in the Sayre fire exceeded the prior record set in 1961 by the Bel Air Fire which claimed 484 homes. There were no fatalities, just minor injuries to five firefighters and one civilian.

The Conejo Grade is a 7% grade incline on a section of US 101. Also known as the Camarillo Grade, it links Thousand Oaks and cities of the Conejo Valley, with Camarillo and the cities on the Oxnard Plain. With a summit elevation of 841.1 feet (256.4 m), California Highway Patrol inspection stations for trucks are situated on both sides of the highway at the upper terminus of the grade.

Santa Susana Depot is a train station building located near the Santa Susana Pass in Simi Valley, California. Originally located on Los Angeles Avenue at Tapo Street, the depot opened in 1903. The station was named after the Santa Susana Mountains at the east end of the Simi Valley. The Southern Pacific Railroad used the double-"N" spelling of Susanna on the depot sign facing west, and the single-"N" spelling of Susana on the sign facing east. The Santa Susana Tunnel opened the next year, reducing the distance and transit time between Montalvo and Burbank on the Coast Route linking Los Angeles and San Francisco. Plans and construction for the building were based on Southern Pacific Railroad standard design Two Story Combination Depot No. 22. The depot served the community of Rancho Simi as a passenger station, telegraph office, and freight depot where farmers could deliver crops for shipping and pick up farming equipment delivered by the railroad.

Oak Park is a 100.5-acre (40.7 ha) open space regional park located at 901 Quisma Drive in Simi Valley, California, near Moorpark and California State Route 118. This county park, maintained by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, is situated in the foothill country surrounded by rolling hills in the extreme west Simi Valley. Oak Park is recognized for its many large oak trees, rolling hills, canyons, wildlife, and hiking trails through abundance of coastal scrub brush. The facilities offered are a playground, horseshoe pits, basketball court, picnic tables, restroom, dump station for RV’s, water fountain, BBQ, fire rings, as well as tent- and RV-camping. Oak Park is a reservation only park with a 2 night minimum. There are partial hookups and 30 amp service at 16 campsites in 2018 for tents or RV’s, a 16 space rv group camping area and one group tent site area for up to fifty people. There are 4-day use group areas. There are occasionally summer programs in the camping site area. The park is home to various native flora and also wildlife, which consists of a wide range of Simi Valley native species such as numerous raptors, sagebrush lizards, alligator lizards, roadrunners, hummingbirds, grey foxes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, skunks, and various snakes, including the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake and California Kingsnake. The park district is in the process of acquiring the 734-acre (297 ha) Alamos Canyon on the other side of West Los Angeles Avenue. A trail connecting Oak Park to the Alamos Canyon would be created and included within a greenbelt between the cities of Simi Valley and Moorpark.

The Arroyo Simi Overhead is a tall viaduct in Ventura County, California, that carries State Route 118 over the Arroyo Simi. At the south end of the bridge, the freeway continues as SR 23. The state routes continue as highways to the west and north respectively. The entire connector, completed in 1993, is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) long and includes seven bridges.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Arroyo Conejo</span> Creek in the Conejo Valley, California

Arroyo Conejo carries part of the longest creek in the Conejo Valley which sprawls past the cities of Thousand Oaks and Camarillo, and the communities of Newbury Park, Casa Conejo and Santa Rosa Valley. Arroyo Conejo is the primary drainage for the City of Thousand Oaks. Its watershed covers 57 square miles (150 km2) of which 43 square miles (110 km2) are in the Conejo Valley and 14 square miles (36 km2) in the Santa Rosa Valley.
