Harald Johannes Gjein (born 3 June 1955 in Stokke) is a Norwegian veterinarian and civil servant,and the current director-general of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. He was appointed by the King-in-Council on 15 April 2011 and took office on 1 June 2011,succeeding Joakim Lystad. [1]
He graduated as a veterinarian at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in 1980,and holds a dr.scient. degree from 1994,with the dissertation Housing of pregnant sows:a field study on health and welfare,with special emphasis on claw lesions. [2] He was CEO of the swine producers' association Norsvin from 2000 to 2007 and deputy director of the Norwegian Veterinary Institute 2007–2009 and director 2009–2011. [3]

Onychectomy,popularly known as declawing,is an operation to remove an animal's claws surgically by means of the amputation of all or part of the distal phalanges,or end bones,of the animal's toes. Because the claw develops from germinal tissue within the third phalanx,amputation of the bone is necessary to fully remove the claw. The terms onychectomy and declawing imply mere claw removal,but a more appropriate description would be phalangectomy,excision of toe bone.
Bernhard Lauritz Frederik Bang,was a Danish veterinarian. He discovered Brucella abortus in 1897,which came to be known as Bang's bacillus. Bang's bacillus was the cause of the contagious Bang's disease which can cause pregnant cattle to abort,and causes undulant fever in humans.
