Hard launching is when a guided missile's rocket engine is ignited while still inside the launch assembly (sometimes referred to as missile canister), silo, or tube. Although technically simpler than soft launching, its disadvantage is that the missile silo has to be more resilient to damage.
The Soviets pioneered soft launches as a low-cost method. Soft launching has to overcome the difficulty of first expelling the projectile from the silo passively (without engine ignition). Only after the missile completely clears the silo can the engine be ignited.
Usually, soft launching requires two independent systems: one to expel the missile, and the second to ignite it after adequately clearing the silo. Hard launching is, therefore, more straightforward but more expensive. There is also a higher degree of risk associated with hard launches. If there is a malfunction, the missile can detonate inside the silo, severely damaging neighboring components and auxiliary systems of the launch base.
Most of the United States ICBMs and SLBMs are cold launched. The MK-41 [1] on American Ships [2] launch [3] SM-2, SM-3 and SM-6 hot. [4] The US Navy has been adopting more versatile launch systems that can work in either modes.

RIM-7 Sea Sparrow is a U.S. ship-borne short-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile weapon system, primarily intended for defense against anti-ship missiles. The system was developed in the early 1960s from the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile as a lightweight "point-defense" weapon that could be retrofitted to existing ships as quickly as possible, often in place of existing gun-based anti-aircraft weapons. In this incarnation, it was a very simple system guided by a manually aimed radar illuminator.
A vertical launching system (VLS) is an advanced system for holding and firing missiles on mobile naval platforms, such as surface ships and submarines. Each vertical launch system consists of a number of cells, which can hold one or more missiles ready for firing. Typically, each cell can hold a number of different types of missiles, allowing the ship flexibility to load the best set for any given mission. Further, when new missiles are developed, they are typically fitted to the existing vertical launch systems of that nation, allowing existing ships to use new types of missiles without expensive rework. When the command is given, the missile flies straight up far enough to clear the cell and the ship, then turns onto the desired course.
The Ticonderoga class of guided-missile cruisers is a class of warships of the United States Navy, first ordered and authorized in the 1978 fiscal year. It was originally planned as a class of destroyers. However, the increased combat capability offered by the Aegis Combat System and the passive phased array AN/SPY-1 radar, together with the capability of operating as a flagship, were used to justify the change of the classification from DDG to CG shortly before the keels were laid down for Ticonderoga and Yorktown.

Soft launching is the method of launching a missile in such a way that the rocket motor ignites outside of the launch tube; the missile is ejected non-explosively. The objective is to minimize the risk of damage to the launcher by maintaining a safe distance. This is in contrast with hard launching, where the missile's rocket engine is ignited while still inside the launch assembly or tube, which generates a backblast area.
The Korean Vertical Launching System is a vertical launching system developed by South Korea to be deployed by the Republic of Korea Navy. It is used in the Sejong the Great-class destroyer, and is scheduled to be added to the Daegu-class frigate. The K-VLS can deploy the Cheolmae-2 air defense missile, Haegung air defense missile, Hong Sang Eo anti-submarine missile, Haeseong-II, Hyunmoo-3 land-attack cruise missiles and even SLBMs.

The DDG(X) or Next-Generation Guided-Missile Destroyer program of the United States Navy aims to develop a class of surface combatants to succeed 22 Flight II Ticonderoga-class cruisers and 28 Flight I/II Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The program is the culmination of the Large Surface Combatant (LSC) initiative that followed the cancellation of CG(X) and curtailing of the procurement of the Zumwalt-class destroyers. The ships will become the principal large surface combatants of the U.S. Navy; compared to their predecessors, they will incorporate more powerful sensors and have more room and weight margin for growth.
