Hardlife Avenue Stars is a South Sudanese Afro-pop and dance group. Vocalist Siliman Musa (Nicky Prince) and the late rapper Murye Alex (Mantani) who died on 24 July 2021 in a motor road accident; [1] formed the group in South Sudan in 2011. [2] Initially a duo, Ochwo Junior (Linus) then joined in 2016 after a series of collaborations with Kilo Kwen Kulek, offside and Yau De. The group now survived with Nicky Prince and Linus as a duo.

Background

Hardlife Avenue Stars released their debut studio album Lost Culture in 2012. Their second studio album Yau De was released on 4 November 2014, earning the group a number of accolades and nominations. On 3 April 2015, the group completed their first album launch dubbed “Yau De,” establishing them as a household name in South Sudan. [3] The band had successful tours in South Sudan and part of Uganda's West Nile Region, claiming a huge attention with their videos being played on Ugandan charts on both television and radio.

History

The band was formed in 2011 by Nicky Prince and Murye Alex, popularly known as Mantani. They met through Mantani's brother who was a fan of Prince's high school a cappella group. At that time he returned from Khartoum, Sudan and had wanted to form a group; that led to them collectively agreeing on the name “Hardlife Avenue” as a reference to the difficulty of their childhood struggles.

The group ventured into artist management with signings like JERO OV Hardlife.

Hardlife Avenue Stars lost one of its members, Mantani, in a motorcycle accident in Uganda in 2021. [9] [10]

Nicholas Tatambuka, better known by his stage names Nick Nola and Nicky Nola, is a Ugandan R&B singer-songwriter and dancer who came to prominence as a member of the musical group Hip Hop Canvas. Signed to Platinum Records, the group first arrived on the music scene in 2005 with their single "Mother Africa", which won Best Hip Hop Single. In 2010, Nola was included in Ladybrille's list of the "15 African Breakout Artists of The Year". In 2013, HiPipo 5Star rated him the 34th most popular artist in the whole of East Africa.

Lillian Mbabazi is a Rwandan-Ugandan recording artist and entertainer. She was born in Uganda to Rwandan Parents. According to a Ugandan publicist at Bryan Morel Publications, Lilian's music style is neo-soul associated with R&B Band tendencies. She was a member of Blu*3. In 2014, she was one of the featured artists in the second season of "Coke Studio Africa".

Peter Miles , born Peter Kanyike, is a Ugandan reggae and dancehall artist. He sings in Luganda, Patwa and English. He appeared on the Vuqa cypher, A song alongside rappers Bigtril, The mith, Ruyonga, St Nelly Sade and more others in 2016.

Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Undercover Brothers Ug also simply known as Undercover Brothers are a Ugandan music duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Jay K Mulungi and vocalist Timothy Kirya, whose music career sparked off when they won the auditions and represented Uganda in the sixth season of East Africa's biggest singing competition Tusker Project Fame. The duo released their first album titled At Dawn in December 2014. In December 2016, their song Nsikatila was nominated in the Best R&B Song category at HiPipo Music Awards (#HMA) 2017.

Okuta Ceaser Malish Jeremiah in Torit, South Sudan, known by his stage name Silver X, is a South Sudanese singer. Silver X has won many East African awards in Nairobi, Kenya as well as South Sudanese awards in Juba.

Allan Okello is a Ugandan footballer who plays for Vipers SC the Uganda national team as an attacking midfielder. He was the Fufa Airtel Footballer of the Year 2019.

Walukagga Shafik, is a Ugandan rapper better known by his stage name Fik Fameica a.k.a. Fresh Bwoy. He makes music in genres like rap, hiphop, afrobeat and afropop .His musical debut came in 2015 with "Pistol" under the Black Man Town music label, led by a Ugandan music icon Geosteady. His later songs, "Salawo" and "Mbega Wa Bbaala" gained him a recording contract with Kama Ivien Management. His club hit "Batuwulira" followed by "Byenyenya" made him the most booked Ugandan artist in 2017. Fik won awards in Uganda and East Africa and went on to win Uganda's most popular artist in 2017. In 2018, he was crowned Breakthrough Artist, Best in Hip-Hop and Best Rap Song for his track "Kutama" at the annual HiPipo Awards.

Ngot Peter Mou Athuaip.k.a.Slate Nation is a South Sudanese-born Australia-based musician, artist and songwriter. He was born in Thiet, a suburb of Tonj State.

Kampala Boy is the first studio album by Ugandan musician Flex D'Paper, released on 10 December 2021. The album features guest appearances from Swae Lee on the intro and songs with Navio, Fik Fameica, A Pass, Keko, Shena skies, Wake the Poet, Mozelo Kidz, Kemishan, Lagum the rapper. The production includes Aethan Music, Mio Made, Sam Lamara, Wake the Poet, Bad Chwezi and Lucian.
