Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd has been formed in 1970 as a state government cooperative for facilitating procurement, processing, and marketing of milk and dairy products under brand name "Vita" in state of Haryana. It is under the ownership of Ministry of Cooperation, Government of Haryana. It procures milk from its producers particularly belonging to economically weaker sections in state of Haryana and subsequently processes into milk and various milk products for marketing through affiliated milk unions. It provides education to the unions on dairy processing efficiency, and helps them with guidance on animal care including artificial insemination, vaccination, and feeding. [2]

History and Administration

The Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd was started in 1970 to facilitate milk procurement from various producers in the state [3] [4] and promoting the socio-economic development [5] and facilitating its processing into various products before marketing through different unions across Haryana branded "Vita". [6] [7] Dairy Cooperatives in state work in three tier system wherein :- i) Milk Producers Cooperative Societies operate at village level [8] ii) Milk Unions operate at District level iii) State Dairy Federation at state level. The society in May 2020 planned to open a new plant in South Haryana and submitted the plan to State Government. [6]

In Year 2016, Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd, had started VITA milk booths at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) operated petrol pumps in several places of the state. [9]

In Year 2020, the Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd procured extra milk from producers which have been left over due to the closure on various outlets in State due to COVID pandemic. [3] [10]

Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd had started online delivery of its products in select areas of the state from year 2020,and for this had tied up with Swiggy, food ordering and delivery platform. [11]

Milk Yield and Production

Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd procures milk from one of the highest yielding buffalo breed called "Murrah buffaloes". [2]

Occasionally, Haryana Government enhances the purchase rate of the milk based on the fat content in the milk in addition to subsidy per litre of milk given to the producers. [13]

From year 2016, Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd was supported by Haryana Government in promoting cow milk. [14]

From October 2020, Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd had introduced turmeric milk and from January 2021,Cow Ghee. [15]

Verghese Kurien, known as the "Father of the White Revolution" in India, was a social entrepreneur whose "billion-litre idea", Operation Flood, made dairy farming India's largest self-sustaining industry and the largest rural employment sector providing a third of all rural income. It made India the world's largest milk producer, doubled the milk available for each person, and increased milk output four-fold in 30 years.

Murrah buffalo Indian breed of water buffalo

The Murrah buffalo is a breed of water buffalo mainly kept for milk production. It originates in Haryana and Punjab of India, where it is kept in the districts of Bhiwani, Hisar, Rohtak, Jind, Jhajhar, Fatehabad, Gurgaon and the capital region of Delhi. It has been used to improve the milk production of dairy buffalo in other countries, such as Italy, Bulgaria and Egypt. A Murrah buffalo at the Lakshmi Dairy Farm in Punjab set a record of 26.335 kg (58.06 lb) of milk in the 2016 National Livestock Competition and Expo. In Brazil, this breed of buffalo is used for production of both meat and milk. Murrahs sell for a high price.

Dankuni City in West Bengal, India

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is a dairy cooperative from Karnataka, India, which sells products such as milk, curds, ghee, butter, ice cream and sweets under the brand name Nandini. It is a federation of milk producers under the ownership of Ministry of Cooperation, Government of Karnataka. Almost every district in state of Karnataka has milk producing co-operatives. The milk is collected from farmers who are its members, processed and sold in the market by the brand of Nandini. It is the second largest milk co-operative in India after Amul.

Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation

The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), doing business as Milma, as a state government cooperative society in 1980 with its head office in Thiruvananthapuram. It is a state government cooperative under the ownership of Ministry of Cooperation, Government of Kerala. KCMMF is a Federation of Regional three Regional Milk Unions, the ERCMPU, TRCMPU and MRCMPU.

Animal husbandry in India

Many farmers in India depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood. In addition to supplying milk, meat, eggs, wool, their castings (dung) and hides, animals, mainly bullocks, are the major source of power for both farmers and dairies. It provides education to the unions on efficient dairy processing, and assists them with animal care including artificial insemination, vaccination, and feeding.

Prairie Farms Dairy American Midwestern dairy cooperative

Prairie Farms Dairy is a dairy cooperative founded in Carlinville, Illinois, and now headquartered in Edwardsville, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis. As a dairy cooperative, Prairie Farms receives milk from producers and converts it into many different products, including cheese, butter, ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, various dips, yogurt, and fluid milk. Prairie Farms also produces and sells juices, flavored drinks, and pre-made iced tea.

The cooperative movement in India plays a crucial role in the agricultural sector, banking and housing. Many cooperative societies, particularly in rural areas, increase political participation and are used as a stepping stone by aspiring politicians.

Dudhsagar Dairy Divsion of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation

The Mehsana District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd., popularly known as Dudhsagar Dairy, is a division of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation which is under the ownership of Ministry of Cooperation of the Government of Gujarat Dudhsagar Dairy is the largest dairy in Asia, processing on an average 1.41 million kilograms of milk each day. It has established a network for procuring milk from 450,000 milk producers through 1150 village milk cooperatives.

Banas Dairy

Banas Dairy (Banaskantha District Cooperative Milk Federation, Palanpur) is a division of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation which is under the ownership of Ministry of Cooperation, Government of Gujarat based in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, India and is Asia's largest milk producer. It was founded in 1969, in accordance with the 1961 rule of the National Dairy Development Board under Operation Flood. Galbabhai Nanjibhai Patel played an important role in the foundation of the dairy. It is headquartered at Palanpur.

Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, Hisar, a publicly funded, institute for water buffalo research. It is located 170 kilometres (110 mi) from Delhi, at Hisar in the north Indian state of Haryana. It has a sub-campus, Bir Dosanjh, at Nabha. CIRB operates a nationwide network of 10 research centres working on breed improvement of the 7 main native breeds. CIRB, with over 20 laboratories for buffalo research, is the world's largest buffalo research institute with the widest range of breeds under study. With the aim of improving breeds and dissemination of information, CIRB has sold over 1,000 bulls, conducted ~200,000 artificial insemination in the field for the farmers’ buffaloes with a 41% conception rate, distributed ~520,000 progeny tested frozen semen kits to 45,000 farmers and over 250 institutes, imparted training to several thousand farmers on advanced buffalo husbandry, and created the world's first online Buffalopedia in several languages. It has a large research partner network across India and the globe. It is the second institute to successfully clone a buffalo in 2016, after the first successful cloning was achieved by the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in 2010. In July 2017, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research ranked CIRB Hisar as India's number one Buffalo research institute for the year 2016–17.
