Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu is a Nigerian trade unionist who was president of the Nigerian Labour Congress from 1978 to 1984. He is a former General-Secretary of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity.

Life

Sunmonu was born in the village of Akim-Eshiem, Ghana to Nigerian parents. [1] He has an identical twin brother named Hussein, both of whom worked with the Federal Ministry of Works in the 1960s. Sunmonu briefly attended a primary education in Ghana before following his paternal grandmother and mother back to Nigeria where they settled at Osogbo. In Osogbo, he attended Ansar Ud Deen, Osogbo (1948-1950), All Saints School, Osogbo and then Osogbo Grammar School (1955). [2] As a young student, he and his twin met Alake Ladapo Ademola who was then in exile in Osogbo. [3] Ademola later sponsored his trip to Ghana after he quit school due to lack of support in paying the school fees. Sunmonu stayed in Ghana in 1956 before moving back to Nigeria a year later. In 1957 he gained admission into a technical school in Yaba later earning a certificate in 1961. [4] Sunmonu completed his education with a diploma in civil engineering from Yaba College of Technology. During his final year at Yaba College, he was president of the college's student union, an executive member of the National Union of Nigerian Students and member of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria.

Sunmonu joined the civil service in 1961 working for the Federal Ministry of Works and Surveys as a technical officer. His first assignment was working on the Zaria-Kano road. Sunmonu later became the General Secretary of the Association of Technical Officers within the Ministry. [5]

Union activities

In 1969, he became the Second Assistant Secretary of the Wahab Goodluck led Public Works Aerodrome Technical and General Works' Union. In 1974, he became the union's president.

Sunmonu was elected president of the newly formed Nigerian Labour Congress in 1978. Prior to the union's formation, the Obasanjo government had disbanded four national labour centers, including the moderate United Labour Congress led by Haroun Adebola and the more radical Nigeria Trade Union Congress. As labour leader, Sunmonu's NLC presented a Charter of Demands that among other things sought the institutionalization of a national minimum wage and minimum pension scheme. To press the government to approve its demand, NLC embarked on a national strike in May 1981. [6] Shagari's administration subsequently reached a compromise with the union.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment is the Nigerian Federal Ministry concerned with relations between workers and employers. It is headed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, who is appointed by the President, and is assisted by a Permanent Secretary, who is a career civil servant.

He was forced out of the position by the military government when it dissolved the union in 1988. During Abacha's regime, he was brought back into labour matters as the sole administrator of NUPENG.

Pascal Bafyau (1947–2012) was a Nigerian trade unionist and the third president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, he led the union from 1988 to 1994, succeeding Ali Chiroma. Bafyau passed through the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru and was also a nominated member of the 1986 Political Bureau.

Francis Edward Tachie-Menson was a Ghanaian politician. He served as a Deputy Minister, Chairman of the Ghana Housing Corporation, a member of parliament, and a state minister in the first republic. He was the member of parliament for the Denkyira constituency from 1954 to 1965 and the member of parliament for the Edina-Eguafo constituency from 1965 to 1966. He also served as Ghana's Minister for Housing from 1965 to 1966.

Ayuba Philibus Wabba is a Nigerian trade union leader. He was returned as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress for another four years during the unions leadership elections on 6 February 2019.

Chief Muraina Oyelami is a Nigerian painter and drummer of Yoruba descent. He was among the first generation of artists to come out of the Osogbo School of Art in the 1960s. He was a drummer and actor with the theatre company of Duro Ladipo. He taught traditional music and dance at Obafemi Awolowo University from 1976 to 1987. As a musician, he trained in the dùndún and the Batá drum. He was the chief of his hometown Iragbiji.

Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke was a Nigerian politician, a labour activist and a senator in the second republic who represented Osun State Senatorial District 11 which comprises six Local Governments —Ede, Osogbo, Irepodun, Ifelodun, Odo Otin, Ila Orangun.

On 31 May 2024, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) called an indefinite general strike, demanding the country's monthly minimum wage be raised from ₦30,000 to ₦494,000. This came as a response to a national cost-of-living crisis, as the price of food and electricity overtook the minimum wage, which is relatively low for the large African economy.
